Pretenders (*snort*) to the cheesecake

Sarah Hayden@wearyourshaydes.bsky.social

I really did not expect the conservative embrace of Cheesecake Factory like they’ve loved it the whole time - your beloved Cheesecake Factory was forged in Beverly Hills, baby, you are pretenders to the cheesecake

Hell yeah, reading

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

I voted against this pervy bill.

Doctors and nurses are voicing their objections. I-638 would require EVERY girl who wants to participate in sports to go through biological sex verification. That means expensive, invasive, and utterly gross examinations. Protect our kids and let them play. Vote NO on I-638

"Pastoral" -André Alexis #booksky #332 ⭐⭐⭐/5 Picked this up because I enjoyed "Fifteen Dogs" by the same author. Hits similar disturbing notes as that book, but in a small rural town. Lots of interiority, honest reflection of faith & why people get together, fall in love. But it's unsettling.

"Taipei Story" -R.F. Kuang #booksky #340 ⭐⭐⭐/5 A college student of Chinese decent goes to Taipei to find cultural identity/connection with her family while learning Chinese. It all seems to go sideways, in awkward fashion, but I think she may have succeeded on some level. Didn't really like the MC.

"Reality in Ruins: How Conspiracy Theory Became an American Evangelical Crisis" -Jared Stacy #booksky #341 ⭐⭐⭐/5 While exploring the faults in the evangelical movement, the author falls into sermonizing & not interrogating the faults in taking any religious approach to politics. I'm over it.

"Eros the Bittersweet" -Anne Carson #booksky #338 ⭐⭐⭐/5 Musings on Greek romantic poetry/meanings of love that I wish I had during my college humanities courses. Not sure I'd recommend it unless that's your area of interest, picked it up because of the author's recent Nobel award.

"Lettering Alphabets & Artwork: Inspiring Ideas & Techniques for 60 Hand-Lettering Styles" -Jay Roeder #booksky #339 ⭐⭐/5 60% of this book is copy/paste instructions. The rest are examples of lettering illustrations that are admittedly cool. It's not a great book for learning how to letter.

"The Teller of Small Fortunes" -Julie Leong #booksky #336 ⭐⭐⭐/5 This is peak cozy fantasy - no real dangers, no MC romance, small wins, rural setting, small dramas. Read this if you want to keep on an even keel. I do not expect to see this inspire fanfic, but you never know.

"Poisonous Plants and Fatal Fungi: The Lore and Lure of Deadly Botanicals" -Sandra Kynes #booksky #337 ⭐⭐⭐/5 Main reason I wouldn't keep a copy as a reference is the woeful lack of illustrations. C'mon. I want to see the plants & be able to ID them. Some interesting lore/background tho.

"Veronica Speedwell #10 A Ghastly Catastrophe" -Deanna Raybourn #334 ⭐⭐⭐/5 Solving crimes in Victorian London, but with today's sexual mores and feminism. Fun but unlikely.

"Charlotte & Thomas Pitt #1 The Cater Street Hangman" -Anne Perry #booksky #335 ⭐⭐⭐/5 Solving crimes in Victorian London, but with era-appropriate manners & social stratification. The romance is restrained & the crime is unhinged.

"Real Artists Wear Black" -Danielle Krysa #booksky #333 ⭐⭐⭐/5 Zooms through every lie you've heard (and told to yourself) about being an artist. It was fine. I enjoyed some of the featured artwork more than the actual advice, tbh.

I'm the only poptart fan in my house, and this recipe is 15 servings. Decisions, decisions...
