Fascinating account showing how a false claim can become widely accepted (and propagated by multiple independent sources) as a result of a common academic shortcut: citing a source you haven't actually read after seeing it cited by another source: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

is.gdAcademic urban legends - Ole Bjørn Rekdal, 2014Many of the messages presented in respectable scientific publications are, in fact, based on various forms of rumors. Some of these rumors appear so frequently,...

I need you all to understand that it's not that kind of bot. The relentless omnicausing on the left is fucking exhausting.

This Will Hold@thiswillhold.bsky.social

🚨President Z is taking out “data centers” that run Putin’s bot farms just three weeks before the U.S. midterms. After the third strike on Yandex's data center, Russian bot activity dropped to zero. This is why Trump and Musk are calling for President Z’s removal. It has nothing to do with diesel.

I am nearing the end of my Recurse Center batch and starting to look for work! If you know of something short- or long-term that might be a good fit, please be in touch. More details in the next post

There used to be a magazine here called CustomPC that I was a big fan of during my computer building days. Even after those, I used to buy one issue every year without fail: the Christmas issue where they taste tested all the mince pies available on the high street.

Review #1: M&S classic mince pies (the basic tier at M&S). £0.46 each. Pt. 1: Filling all the way to the top, excellent quantity. Very traditional flavour for the filling, not too sweet. Very discernible taste of brandy, which feels generous, and really adds a Christmas-y feel.

M&S classic mince pies pt 2: Unfortunately let down by the pastry: it's too thick, and it's crumbly to the point of being floury, which adds up to the overall mouthfeel of the pie being far too dry. Verdict: you probably wouldn't eat a second one if they were being handed out at an event.

It was great because they performed the reviews with all the diligence you'd expect from an outlet more au fait with reviewing barely-differentiable graphics cards. The magazine shut down a couple of years ago, and I feel lost and adrift without their mince pie reviews to guide me.

Obviously the only sensible option remaining is for me to buy every mince pie I see and review them all. So here it is: my mince pie review 2024! There's just one of me so I won't be scoring or ranking them as I can't taste them all in one day, but I'll keep posting more as time goes on.

You are up to date.
