TTRPG GMs and Players. How would you feel about the GM auto rolling the player's skill checks. Where players only speak about what they want to do, and you make hidden rolls, and narrate the results?

The people who love their dice will hate it (which is a massive majority). This way works best with people who do not have experience playing ttrpgs and don't want to engage with the deeper mechanics Lot of heavy lifting for the GM. I prefer the GM never rolls and just focuses on the game feel

Partial compromise I use is the 'rule of two'. In a D20 system it would become the 'rule of eight' or maybe ten. You are allowed to assume an automatic two per die on a D6, or an auto-8 on a D20, without rolling. If that's enuough to succeed, GMs can just include the success in the narrative without

having to call for a roll. Also useful for NPC search and stealth rolls - you can 'roll' for them and get an adequate result without giving them away by rolling dice. Also handy for 'passive perception', 'passive streetwise', 'passive sense magic', 'passive sense Force or whatever else might come up

A friend of mine wanted to do hidden rolls where they get surprised by the actions of an NPC, if they tried charming or intimidating them. But that involves me knowing Thier stats and whether they succeed or not

Ah so the players want certain rolls to be hidden so they dont know if the NPCs buy it or not Personally I don't want that but if you players want it sure. Rolling hidden for things that you can see the effect of immediately on the other hand seems pointless.

I get where they are coming from because it's about the result being conveyed to them either via the roll of the dice or the GM doing it in a narrative voice. They prefer the GM doing it through the narrative voice.
