TTRPG GMs and Players. How would you feel about the GM auto rolling the player's skill checks. Where players only speak about what they want to do, and you make hidden rolls, and narrate the results?

A company can spend millions on marketing. Move thousands of content creators in tandem to push their product. But nothing changes your mind about something more than a friend you trust recommending you try something

Does anyone have any tips for doing game dev vlogs/blogs? Ive made a really cool personal project and now regret not recording the process.

There is a strong argument to be made that legendary Pokémon are way too nerfed, for the sole reason that players should be able to capture them. And it holds back legendaries in the game from feeling epic.

The discourse around @2xko.riotgames.com Devs wanting to make "substantial changes" to the game is really funny, because it's a direct result of them being extremely transparent in their thinking behind the scenes. I'm sure they can't provide more info, because they themselves are uncertain.

What is your favourite 6 or 7 out of 10 game? I really enjoyed the Harry Potter games on PC back in the day. The challenges , puzzles and exploration were so good!

A shovel salesman argues that every person needs a shovel, as it's essential for survival. He questions how one could exist without one and suggests that those without a shovel will fall behind. He advocates for Universal Basic Shovels for everyone in the future.

Which game is the blueprint for the third person action adventure genre? What inspired the gameplay of uncharted, last of us, God of war, batman arkham?

In most modern video games, no matter how cool your character looks, the player is actually just controlling a capsule.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? In some states, the right to an appointed attorney, "if you cannot afford" one, made famous by the Miranda warning, is not guaranteed for misdemeanor charges, even when the defendant ends up serving their sentence in prison or jail.

Fun game dev fact: If you're holding a map of a place while standing in that place, there's always at least one point on the map that aligns perfectly with its real-world location. This is why mini maps work.

Can someone explain the profability of the streaming model? You have X users that can go up or down monthly. A new series costs Y. Y cost can only be justified if X goes up enough because of the series and stays up long enough for delta X * subcost > Y. Am I missing something?

fun fact: if you draw fanart for a game within the first week of any sort of major PR event for it (announcement, demo, release etc) there is a 99% chance the entire dev team on the game knows who you are because they are doing nothing but reposting fanart in slack

I still can't believe that Grammerly can legally sell thier Gen AI tools to students, while simultaneously selling tools to teachers to detect use of Gen AI in thier students assignments. ChatGPT can you define Conflict of Interest?

How? Like seriously. Where did that money go? Facebook bought oculus over a decade ago for 2 billion , and changed it's name to Meta only 4 years ago. They aren't throwing money at various studios to build VR experiences. Where is this money going??

Aftermath@aftermath.site

Meta has spent over $100 billion on VR. aftermath.site/meta-horizons-...

It's now extremely common to see bots comment on social media posts. Short form content is thier favourite as all they have to do is repeat the last line and put a laughing emoji and they will get a ton of engagement from real people. We are at the gates of hell

The worst position to be in when buying a gift is knowing them well enough to get them something they would love and want, but not knowing them well enough to know if they already have it.

LMAO, Grammerly sells students AI generated text tools to complete and correct their assignments and sells educators tools to auto correct and detect AI in assignments. What a horrible way to play both sides.

My leading theory is that due to the the immense amount of micromanagement for a sustained duration(farming) & long wind down phase makes it very easy to get upset if you feel someone is not pulling their weight.

This is why most tech companies never step into the revenue game. If they are always in loss but gaining customers, they can claim to be valued way higher than the fundamentals reflect. Unfortunately in this finite game of capitalism, there's only so much thier user base is be able to afford.

OpenAI is completely screwed. If they're losing money on $200/month, they're losing it on $20/month and their real costs are so much higher than they can ever get anyone to pay. A pale horse. techcrunch.com/2025/01/05/o...

The biggest scam no one talks about is that Internet speed is measured in BITS per second, and files are measured in BYTES. If you've ever wondered why you're 100mb file takes more than a second to download on 100mbs connection, it's because your Internet speed is 1/8th the speed you think it is.

Remember tommorow is the last day you can create your game dev discourse 2025 bingo card! Luckily we already had the Yellow paint discourse so close to the New year so it probably won't happen again until March.

The Yellow paint video irked me when they used immersiveness and realism interchangeably. A game does not need to be realistic to be immersive, it just needs to be consistent. If breakable barrels are marked in yellow paint, a barrel with yellow paint that you can't break is immersion breaking.

One key aspect missing from the Yellow paint discourse is the fact that identifying paths is not the core appealing feature of the game. I don't want to find the path by jumping to my death because it wasn't climable, I just want to get to the top. The Ff7 wall has so many false leads.
