Too many people on Bluesky think that relentless expressions of despair are a sign of intellectual sophistication.

When we focus on doom and gloom, we forget about all of the beautiful things that we are seeking to protect. I’ve been actively curating my feed to include more visual artists, musicians, and other creators for this very reason.

But also, and this speaks to the sort of clarity of thinking that’s really needed in this grim political moment, there’s a difference between expressing despair because you’re feeling despair and want solidarity in its expression and viewing despair, in all contexts, as more sophisticated than hope.

"that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain." - le guin

I'm with @faineg.bsky.social on this one. Giving in to relentless despair posting is doing the work of the opposition for it. I feel plenty of unhappiness verging on despair myself, but I work really, really hard not to post it (too much, anyway). It puts bad energy out and saps my will to fight.

I was going to post something snarky, but looking at the number of replies you've got... I'm surer everyone's already done that.
