Look, I've seen this stance a lot. And it is fundamentally wrong. "These children should just have to be unpaid tutors of their classmates" is an incredibly toxic perspective. If only because 99% of the time they're not particularly good at it.

Ann Leckie@annleckie.com

"But what do we do with the gifted kids, they'll just sit in class and twiddle their thumbs?" I don't know, I guess it's impossible for them to help their classmates, or work on a project in class that uses their curiosity and also teaches their classmates something. <shrug> Guess we can't!

If I'm rubbing my cat's belly and then I stop, he'll roll over and look at me with a bit of concern, like maybe I died and that's why I paused the belly rubs.

The Wilder watching continued with my 13-year-old and me enjoying The Apartment yesterday. She's a big romcom fan. I told her it's my favorite romcom (or romcom-adjacent). She gave it her highest praise: "Yeah," shrug, "that was pretty good."

Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution is an unbelievable film. And, with the possible exception of her novel And Then There Were None, my favorite thing from Agatha Christie.

Wait, so is Trump dissing Cheesecake Factory now too?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

> What do you think would make the internet better? Not just a blog post, a blog *prompt* — reply with a post from your own blog! (Let us know if you'd like to try something similar…new feature we're trying out, to let folks submit blog replies!)

The last couple of months have been filled with conversations that have me more excited about the future of the internet than I've been in 20 years.

I built an @obsidian.md plugin that natively shows your Bluesky feed in a sidebar panel. It's read-only right now, so you have to hop over to bsky.app to like/repost/reply, but it's pretty slick. Including loading new posts above your current position so you can just scroll up to read what's new.

And it handles displaying replies rather nicely. Next steps are an optional notifications feed, notifications filtering, and maybe replying/posting/liking/reposting from within it. (Though I'm less certain about that, mainly because it's distracting.)

This isn't really fair to gifted kids who aren't trained teachers and don't know how to teach. It's also not fair to the kids who are struggling and need actual, targeted instruction from an adult who knows how to help kids with learning difficulties.

Do you, too, want the internet to be better — and have some ideas for making it happen together? Great post *and* a great example of our new "replies" block in @leaflet.pub! Reply with your own blog post (Leaflet or any @standard.site post) to extend the conversation in the atmo/blogosphere!

We like to think arguments determine our philosophies. But psychology and temperament help determine which arguments feel persuasive in the first place. I wrote about why our reasons for believing aren't always as rational as we imagine. www.aaronrosspowell.com/3mkxy4end722a

It's not that gambling markets (and that's what they are) on elections are inaccurate per se; low probability events sometimes happen and that doesn't mean they weren't low probability. They just don't tell you anything more than is already easily observable, they add no additional information.

Aaron Ross Powell reposted

The thing about stocks, for comparison, is that if you put in the work on serious research you can actually be better informed than average and so beat the market. If you try to do that with predicting elections, you have nothing to go on but the same polls everyone else has and can see at a glance.

The soldiers in DC in fact wander around in small groups looking quite bored and kind of embarrassed to be there.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Now our soldiers are allowed to be strong people ... they are the best looking people you've ever seen. And they stand in the streets. And they walk up to a gang and they beat the shit out of them."

I think some of this is people being embarrassed to be into certain things, especially after something happens that makes them conspicuously cringe, and so insisting everyone else is into them too.
