being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

all contemporary computer translation services use language models more or less identical to the usual suspects, they've used machine learning algorithms for something like 15 years and transformer architectures specifically for over half a decade.

So they are just lookup functions with a bloated name. Intelligence would allow a word derived from two root meanings to be worked out. AI only does that if it’s told what the answer is from its data. It can’t ’work out’ anything.

this is not actually true, linguists have been using machine learning for comparative linguistics and reconstruction for many years. it's actually quite trivial and you can, in fact, produce novel results.

you are basically trying to make this sound as stupid as possible and it's just making you look uneducated lol. making something reliably sound stupid implies you actually understand what's happening here.

No, you are trying to give AI far more credit than it deserves as you are either in the industry and dont like being told your product is crap, or you are desperate ro sell it as a working concept whwn it clearly isnt. AI makes up shit all the time so it’s about as intelligent as a two year old.

I have a bachelor's in linguistics and a master's in anthropology. My first professional job was working in a lab doing computational linguistics research in the late '10s.

God forbid people know what they're talking about when it comes to a technology that's existed for decades in research Obviously AI was invented by Sam Altman in 2022 and nothing before that was the same technology (even though Google's been demoing transformers since like 2017 at this point)

You're bringing a lot of baggage to this conversation and seem to believe people have said things they have not.
