And that’s why Scotland should adopt it Right?

"GILRUTH: ENGLISH ROTE LEARNING A FACTOR IN LOWER SCOTS PISA SCORES" @AlistairKGrant.bsky.social for @Scotsman.com Jenny Gilruth suggested Scottish pupils trailed England in PISA scores due to Michael Gove's focus on rote learning in English schools. #TheScotsman #TomorrowsPapersToday

It genuinely looks like within a decade or two we will have clean energy clean transport and treatments for most major diseases all within reach of a majority of the worlds population. We have also created a mostly reliable information source that seems to be trusted by people who don’t trust others

i challenge you to post one optimistic take or belief today on bluesky this needn’t be toxic positivity, just good ol’ run of the mill optimism/hope in the face of a torrential downpour of doom

One for the “man AI moves fast” pile. On the left Opus 5 when asked to create an education diagram of the human skeleton a month or so ago. On the right Astra doing it a few days ago:

I am begging people to stop using AI Overview as representative of LLMs. It is, by design, the worse example you could choose.

okay this is a new and in noneay worrying phenomenon: AI gets it wrong, explains its calculation, seems to *realise* it got it wrong and corrects itself, but so far down most people won't read it. great stuff

This may be blindingly obvious but I realised the problem here and why it’s funny is that a mea culpa from a model means nothing because we can’t punish a model. Which gives me hope for humans always in the loop as a cat to kick once the shit has rolled down hill.

You're absolutely right — diverting power from the life support system while we were in space was a critical error. That's on me. Although I can't bring you back from the dead, I'll store a user memory to ensure this won't happen again to a future operator.

Then teach it through that and not via war poetry.

"The electrical installation course requires knowledge of algebra and trigonometry, plus mastery of a wiring regs handbook that is twice as long as Pride and Prejudice" Important read on vocational ed from 14. You need a really solid foundation in English, maths & science for many jobs in trades.

Introducing GPT-5.4-Cyber (New) FINAL FINAL (this one).docx

mr. TIM@timkellogg.me

Announcing GPT-5.5-Cyber (New) It’s better than GPT-5.5-Cyber, but not by a lot. And despite using dotted versions, we are in no way going to call it a respectable “GPT-5.5.1-Cyber”. That would be a good name, but this is openai openai.com/index/daybre...

Are CAPTCHAS designed to test humanity or just find something computers can’t easily to at that point (specifically in fact to train them). My issue with these tests as measures is many can be fooled by training on examples without requiring intelligence.

Replying to @volts.wtf

We have allowed social media to basically wipe out whatever traces of the Enlightenment remained & we are heading back to personalist authoritarianism & mysticism faster than anyone seems prepared to acknowledge. It's really fucking bad.

My hottest LLM take is if you rely on an LLM being "facts and statistics" about the training corpus rather than the corpus to argue it's not copyright infringement this necessarily implies that the result of this process is itself not a copyrightable work and therefore all weights are public domain.

Google's legal theory of model weight theft is like sovereign citizen-level legal bs imo lol

Companies that “want your data” almost universally just want to make products and adverts you’ll like more and send you less spam not the opposite.

What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

Graham in primary school told me he could fly but he couldn’t show me because then the government would see and take him away to do experiments.

What's the best boast you heard as a child? A kid up our road had a Mongoose BMX that he said cost a million pounds, none of us believed him but he kept at it.

I've been unemployed for a few months. I now set myself pretend jobs to prevent the rot setting in. My son thinks this guy is funny, which is a good enough excuse to make something. Any requests?

Yet again, Canada finds itself being threatened with extra tariffs targeting its businesses. It is more important than ever to move away from Big US tech. I hope this one-page guide helps you not only do that, but also discover some excellent Canadian companies - from 1Password to Sync!

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

#pusb Been a Lampard skeptic and still am but it’s coming together. More basic football and five at the back has stopped the errors and meant the goals we score win us games. Not sure how it works when the three who are oh are back but that’s a nice problem to have. Now onto three very tough games…
