How broken is today's frontend culture? A friend points out that the median *mobile* page is now larger than a copy of DOOM (2.6 MiB vs. 2.48 MiB), the 75th percentile page is more than 2 DOOMs, and the P90 mobile page is 4.5x the size of DOOM: httparchive.org/reports/page...

httparchive.orgHTTP Archive: Page WeightThis report tracks the size and quantity of many popular web page resources. Sizes represent the number of bytes sent over the network, which may be compressed.

That's content. The grief is about the 1.5MB of JavaScript being loaded on a page that should serve the content and not be a photo editing app or a game in the browser. It's a glitch in incentives that would make things better if awareness is raised. At least IMHO

Sigh. Back in the early 2010s jQuery folks would defend the size of JS libraries because it's just the same as a JPEG. Years later they grew up and acknowledged that it wasn't equivalent. I guess it's 10 years later so we have to go through the cycle again.
