Firefox 159 has landed! This is a pretty big one for web dev stuff: 🎉 CSS scroll-driven animations, both scroll() and view(). 🎉 Scoped custom element registries. 🎉 Streaming sanitization of HTML. And more! developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/M...

Apropos of nothing, if you're considering switching from a recently deprecated browser and want to try Firefox, I just landed `Copy Tab URL` in nightly - it's not bound by default but a quick visit to `about:keyboard` will let you set it, and also take a glance at the other neat shortcuts we have.

I had a weird experience on a train yesterday. There was a table seat, an old lady was sitting in one of the four seats, the other three were empty. I went to put my laptop on the table diagonal from her. She gestured at me, so I took my earphones out. …

Her: My husband is just in the other carriage. Me: … Her: He's coming to sit here. Me: Cool… Does he need all three seats? Her: Oh, no. Me: Cool. [I continue to get my laptop out] Her: Oh fine [she gets up] Me: Oh, err, I can go somewhere else if it's a problem. Her: no no no [she walks off]

The claims here are really sus. Why compare to a 25+ yr old format rather than anything more modern like AVIF? Why claim HDR support, without making it clear that gain maps (an important part of HDR in varying environments) are not supported, yet they are in AVIF?

Chrome 155 adds support for JPEG XL (.jxl) → goo.gle/4yYpSjW Expect 30-50% smaller file sizes than traditional JPEGs, native HDR, progressive rendering, and lossless JPEG transcoding. Under the hood, Chrome uses jxl-rs, a pure Rust decoder built for maximum memory safety and performance.

✍️ Just published a new post about my most-anticipated CSS proposals from Interop 2027! If you’re not familiar, the Interop project is a collaboration between browsers to pick shared focus areas. There’s *so much* good stuff this year, it was hard to pick just 10!

I don't understand the hype around Chrome's responsive iframes feature. It only sets the size on load, so anything which changes the size after that causes the size to be wrong. …

You can call requestResize in the frame to resize, which you can plug into a ResizeObserver on the document, but why isn't that just the default? But, if the iframe is resized on the outside, it'll be wrong, and it seems like requestResize doesn't even fix it. …

Going through the Interop list of features interop-rank.fxdx.dev and selecting and ranking the ones I want to see across browsers in 2027. I chose 15 features. At the top of my list are #HTML #a11y features `focusgroup`, ariaNotify(), `headingoffset` and `headingreset`.

I'm really glad we're running this again. It helped us prioritise a lot of work this year. The previous method was 👍 on GitHub issues, which (imo) is too easily gamed, either intentionally or unintentionally.

And I wonder where you can see @cydstumpel.nl talk next 🤔 ::cough:: FFConf ::cough:: 🥳 (also heard great things about Dark Mode)

This was such a fun conference, and all the talks were brilliant. Events like this should have 10x the audience.

Child reconciliation goes through Element.moveBefore() where supported. Reverse a list of 10 iframes: Preact 10 reloads 9, Preact 11 reloads 0, and the focused input stays focused.

Preact 11 is out 🎉 We’ve been hard at work at making our diffing use modern features like moveBefore , leveraging ESM for tree-shaking Preact Compat and ensuring you have a great experience with resumed hydration.

Firefox 157 has landed, and includes a couple of useful CSS features: 🎉 at-rule() in @supports - lets you limit rules to browsers that support a given at-rule. 🎉 overscroll-behavior: chain - lets scrolling pass up to parent elements, but prevents UA effects like 'bounce' and overscroll. …And more!
