Thanks for this Anil. You’re spot on. The systems bit really resonated. Being a systems thinker in small and medium businesses is where real value gets created, helping proper businesses grow sustainably rather than burning VC money. Appreciate you putting this into words.

Tremendous amount of wisdom packed into this. As someone who has navigated big tech from a social impact and values-based perspective, it rings very true to me. Thank you for saying it all so eloquently.

Appreciate the Most tech isn’t “tech”. I've worked a 25 year career in IT, but never at a tech company. While I don't get the flashier perks of my friends "in tech", I'm also not dealing with their BS right now. My CEO re-committed to our diversity initiatives & any bro culture would get axed.

Corporate or non-profit IT aren't sexy and have their own set of issues. However, I've found them to be of a different nature that aren't generally of the type making you questioning your existence. And, if they do, it is easier to move on from. Plus, you can really get some cool shit done.

Thank you so much for this. Really good stuff, and been feeling a lot of it myself. I've been thinking for a while that "tech job in a non-tech company" is the way to go... So just have to find that now!

This actually reminds me somewhat of a conversation a bunch of us had after the dot vom implosion which reminded me of conversations we had after the DoD/Aerospace implosion of the early 90s here in the LA basin. Nothing new under the sun, really 😀

I think it's great that you also point out that the skills we have can be useful outside of the current big tech infrastructure, and we can innovate elsewhere. That I think is an important message to send: you can do good work, maybe even more impactful work outside of what we call "the industry".

This feels a lot worse than the dotcom bubble's burst did. "A lot of people get laid off because their employer isn't profitable" made sense. The notion that LLMs will be able to replace creatives and engineers is not rational. Plus, at least in 2000 we were a functioning republic.

thanks for this, the despair has been increasing on me again. my concern, after already feeling a while back that I should go elsewhere, has been that another (any other?) place I could bring my skills will simply get its upcoming/inevitable visit from the sloppers, billionaires, and fascists
