Don't come to book club and say "no spoilers please, I haven't finished it yet." The whole point of the evening is to discuss the book and you're only on chapter 5? Piss off!

Wait, someone seriously said that? Oh, ok Nancy, we’ll all just sit here & discuss the weather. Next month just tell her the wrong day for when the club is meeting.

my book club only wanted to read mysteries or romance novels…when my turn to pick a book came it was a pulitzer prize winner 😁. They were not amused. none of them got through it. A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, by John Kennedy Toole I guess you shouldn’t try to expand people’s horizons?

I wasted a weekend reading my pick, hated it. At Book Club, the other three hadn't read it, and never told me in advance, which was always the plan. But they all knew the others hadn't read it.Then they had the gaul to ask how it ended. Told them to read it to find out. We are no longer friends.

Accept spoilers without whining. Consider that you've graduated into a reader who reads for more than "surprise!!" and realize that when the surprise is gone, the whole structure of the book is revealed (as good, bad, indifferent, interesting but flawed, etc.) Enjoying a book only once,

and only for the surprise(s) keeps you far down the reader scale...a hasty reader with only minimal interest in the book proper. Become a re-reader, a reader not for surprises alone but for nuance, for the way that book reads in relation to this other book, for how the book reads ten years later.

Read it again after 20 years...what does it tell you about yourself, how you've grown (or not), either into the book or out of it? Something in it will make more sense when you've had more experience; something in it will annoy you more. And something in it will surprise you then, that wouldn't

have earlier...something you took for granted that you knew already when really you knew NOTHING yet. Not all books do that...not over a long life...but some do. Books converse with each other, with the news cycle, with the advance of science, and with their readers. Join THAT conversation.

I don't like spoilers on a first read, but that's not all I read the book for, and if I liked it I will read it again, possibly many times. But then I'm not in a book club and I wouldn't expect there not to be spoilers!

This happened to me. I went along, talked about why and listened to the others. I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like it, and ended up learning something about myself as well as the book. So I would say, go!

Are book clubs really a thing? People genuinely go to each other's houses to talk about a book that they've all read? I assumed it was some middle class joke, like the working class getting together to discuss Eastenders in a meeting.

Yeah, usually if it is on topic they know nothing about or read normally leaves the room until it is finished...but of course, you know how it is, some just love to kick drama
