I expect every single law enforcement officer of any kind to be willing to die rather than risk killing a person unnecessarily. Anyone who does not like that tradeoff should not seek to carry a gun on behalf of the government. It's really that simple.

That is the outlook in every non-authoritarian country. But sadly we abandoned that approach years ago - cops all seem to think it’s more important they make it home safe than it is that civilians do.

If I were in charge of cops for the day, I'd rewrite policy so that: 1. New cops do not carry firearms during their probationary period (3-5 years) 2. Cops can only carry firearms if they had a clean probationary period 3. Cops cannot be rehired by different agencies if fired for cause

Yeah, that would work great in the U.S., where they’d be the only ones not carrying. I get the impulse, but the reality is that in my neck of the woods—I grew up in an East Texas trailer park—they would have stopped being treated as authority figures altogether.

You’re suggesting that the only reason most people obey the police is the fact they have a gun? Or that regular people would blow away an unarmed cop to get out of a traffic ticket? The fact is that most policing doesn’t require even the threat of a gun let alone an actual gun.

I’m talking about communities that have the most interaction with the police. My trailer park was a hotbed of fencing stolen merchandise, meth cooking, domestic violence, etc. We had more than a few instances where the county sent unarmed social workers without police accompanying them.

Aside from how on earth would you regulate that. Asking people to essentially commit suicide rather than defend themselves, would ensure no one would do the job. Except liars and psychopaths. I'm sure police, already have some of those but making it mandatory wouldn't be good.

Yes this is also my stance. I give no credence to “they feared for their life” They volunteered to “protect and serve” which does not mean “I get to shoot at the moment I feel a little scared” They are supposed to be the professionals in the room.
