I agree that the money in sport is obscene. But, it’s there. If the players and managers don’t take it then it will Stay with the owners or tv people. And they can off with their fucks. I’d prefer the players - and tea ladies and phone receptionists and back room staff - to have it.

I’m waiting for the inevitable ‘restructuring of the business’ statement that they use to justify the cuts. American corporatism at its finest. Not the best look given the obscene money we’ve given our manager and about to give one of our players (not saying they don’t deserve that)

Well said Andrew. Even if these jobs are truly ‘redundant’, sacking 60 staff the same week as giving the manager an obscene pay rise is very poor judgement.

Maybe scrap the whole thing and do a complete reset. No live football on TV apart from cup finals . Back to being a game that people only get to see if they go to watch it. The money would plummet out of the game obviously but at least it would be 1986 again .

With less money in the game it would be more possible to have partial fan ownership. The rot set in when clubs became hyper-capitalist global institutions gobbled up by American billionaires and nation states. And yes I know it’s never going to go back to what it was .

I don't know what the redudant jobs actually are, but I worry it is one of my fears of AI coming true. I see it happening at my own workplace, and it wouldn't surprise me if the same was at Arsenal. Almost even wonder if the 'consultants' were some AI thing.

The money in sport and entertainment is obscene. Always has been but now it seems ridiculous. Laying off 60 people to save buttons when you are paying the Manager and players generational wealth is sickening. Same applies to actors and musicians etc. What a time to be alive.

I'll say it. They don't 'deserve' that level of pay. It is obscene. If we allow ourselves to believe a salary of 20m pa is deserved and affordable while others who work hard on more average wages are laid off then we've lost our way.

Yep. Understood. Not digging at anyone in particular - probably as much at myself for going along with it all. When I step back from it I'm horrified. Best not step back.

Great article and agree with all said, however I do think the following: Firstly, majority of the fanbase would fume if we penny pinched over a transfer. Secondly, maybe we have done this already and why we didn't get anyone else on the LW?

Thirdly, what if we didn't up the wages of Rice, Saliba and they head off to Madrid etc? Finally, at the time when city are in shambles, flouted the rules, and the regulator has highlighted that basically most clubs in UK are insolvent....

surely prudence in cost cutting while being competitive is the ultimate win-win. Unfortunately we see things in isolation and we surely appreciate the nuance. Ultimately optics aren't good, and I don't love the idea of consultants being involved.

All companies must cut jobs now & again. Some roles become redundant due to technology. But even if this was the case a smarter Board would have waited till Jan for the anouncement rather than bring it out in same week as Arteta's huge pay deal & given those at risk a nod to look for other jobs.

Well said - and glad someone has. Dress it up however you like but it’s grim. Such a bad look and we all know behind the wizards curtain avoidable if they really gave a shit Business - revolting

Football is an entertainment business. Look at all the names that scroll up at the end of a blockbuster film. They will all be earning fractions of what the big stars on screen will be earning. Their jobs will come and go, football is no different.

Indeed, there aren’t passionate fans of Universal Studios or Warner Brothers angry about cost cutting. Out passion for the game is how they draw us in. The club, the fans, the players all feel like a big family I thought Andrew Allen’s piece on it yesterday was v balanced.
