Software is arguably the world's most understaffed industry — everyone you ever meet is stretched thin, every company is 'lean' (running on a box of scraps held together with glue by 3-5 people over 20 years). there need to be at least 3x more SWEs employed everywhere

Yeah knowing this makes me a less useful senior. We add quality gates and my opinion is always "staff attrition and/or scope increase will just bring us back down to barely-fit-for-purpose".

We are also starved for juniors. I would absolutely kill to spend more time teaching and less time churning out code. The waves of lean are fucking embarrassing break downs to an industry that needs to be held to a much higher standard. You get unusable bullshit when rigor drops even a little bit.

Eeeeh I don't wanna make any claims, I've seen behind the curtain on the medical industry and "understaffing" is an understatement there
