The last time Europe was in charge of its own “conventional defense”, it was called the Wehrmacht. What we’ve been paying for with our military bases is not having to worry about Europe as a military threat, and we’ll most likely regret Trump’s false economies.

Eliminating support bases in Europe would save $. And as we found out in the gulf, it’s a double edge sword. These bases become an easy target from drones and missiles, reducing their refueling value.

There’s been a lot of rhetoric about “our hemisphere” lately. I suspect that’s a near-term focus: graduating from blowing up fishing boats and abducting Maduro to full-scale takeovers of our southern (and northern?) neighbors.

Canada & Europe already contribute more to NATO financially & militarily. Per Capita, US pays 2nd least to NATO. US also stopped supporting Ukraine's defense. This doesn't free up much. Likely about how EU countries won't let the US use their bases in an illegal war. Also violates N Atlantic Treaty
