I should add the doomers and deranged Luddites to the list, because they end up acting as boosters, convincing everyone that these technologies are much more powerful, easy to implement, universally applicable and unambiguously beneficial for the business than they actually are.

Chrononaut@chrononaut.bsky.social

The biggest reason conversions around tech are so distorted is that for various reasons we let the shills and enthusiasts act as the universal experts on everything related to tech: from its capabilities and applications, through its impacts on society, down to the viability of its business models.

There are two approaches to recruitment: 1. "My job is to eliminate candidates until one is left" - these lazy recruiters abuse automation to effortlessly reject candidates, including the best ones. 2. "My job is to find the best candidate" - use automation to support (not replace!) manual review.

Worth remembering who are the people who fought the hardest to promote Platner as the true champion of people who is defying "Dem HR-lady tyranny", because those people are playing for the MAGA team.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

It was supposed to be Graham Platner. He was going to be the whatabout. The attempted gotchas at El-Sayed about Platner’s tattoo would’ve alone made for weeks of coverage.

The political media is visibly chafing at the current situation, where Republicans are glaringly awful, fucking everything up, running deviant candidates everyone hates, and Dems are just being normal & winning. The force is out of balance. They are viscerally eager to go after Dems about something.

What's the duration of a "unity wartime government" you ask? Depends on how long you can keep the war going.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

The US will likely bomb Iran after the US midterms, and Israel will be in a post-election government formation period, so one scenario in play is, no matter how Israelis vote, they end up with a "unity" wartime government, with Netanyahu still PM, at least as a "caretaker" for a time. But how long?

I knew a guy who used to walk around in a MAGA cap (British, in the UK) and buy the big lifted Ford F150s etc. Didn't see him for a while. Then one day he was driving a normal little hatchback, no MAGA cap. Turned out he had finally gone to rehab for his long running coke addiction.

If people generally associate the national flag with your opponent, you're already in a weak position with the normies. You don't need to be a jingoist flag-waver, but you need to make such symbols part of your image, or they will be usurped by your opponents and weaponized against you.

The war in Yemen is intensifying, deepening the humanitarian crisis and affecting millions of people. I just spoke with President Rashad al-Alimi to reaffirm the EU’s full solidarity with and support for the Government of Yemen and its efforts to restore peace and stability.

El-Sayed has now had to distance himself from both Hasan Piker and his uncle Cenk Uygur. Smart of him since red-brown grifters and ratfuckers like Uygur and Piker always end up helping the fascists.

Yeah, this is really bad. It's good that El-Sayed distanced himself from it, but I am in awe at how Cenk's left-wing PAC managed to combine antisemitism with transphobia and pitch it as *supporting* the Democrat in this race.

Something that helps balance the two is having actual knowledge and experience with automation. Then you know it's never as simple, cheap, easy and universally possible as the boosters and doomers both try to convince you. Also good automation increases productivity in ways that benefit everyone.

Eugene Vinitsky 🍒@eugenevinitsky.bsky.social

It's important for folks to be very thoughtful and caring about job displacement and changes induced by automation. At the same time "all jobs must remain frozen in amber, exactly as they are today" is an absurd position that folks often implicitly wind up at

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

From the outside, a lot of DSA internal politics these days looks like a clash between people who are becoming increasingly successful at democratic politics and people who want to act like authoritarians despite having no actual authority

This is every "funny guy" who is always punching down and saying "relax it's just a joke" and "is comedy illegal now?" to excuse their own abuse, when someone makes a joke at their expense. If you like dishing it out but can't take it, you're a thin-skinned cry-bully.

I talked to Sakariye Abdi Mohamed, a Somali asylum seeker who was arrested at work, while he was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. I called him again once he was deported to Mogadishu. Here's what he had to say.

In August, the Trump administration flew 12 Somali immigrants to an ICE facility at Guantanamo Bay. “Nobody tell us that we’re going to Guantanamo Bay,” Sakariye Abdi Mohamed told journalist Amanda Moore in a phone call from the detention facility. “Just like kidnapping.”
