in case it's not clear this is a commentary on the defenses I'm seeing from some surprising quarters of Trump daydreaming about cities in California getting nuked

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Remember when Trump said there was "very fine ppl on both sides" of a white supremacist rally, & everybody heard it loud & clear, but then he spent years gaslighting about it bc at another point he said "you had some very bad ppl in that group" as if that excused him praising violent racists? I do!

Ok fellow Bs fan here’s my take. I think he meant to say “imagine if” they bombed…the first time and he’s addled brain and language issues chose the wrong words(let them) and now b/c he’s getting push back and attention he’s just doubling down. He’ll continue to say it because he can.

If everyone had just taken a beat and listened to the context the first time, and realized it was his fearmongering justifying his war, then the reaction would have been more analytical and maybe his team doesn’t latch onto it as red meat for him to keep chewing on.

Before that I remember him calling Mexicans criminals and rapists. I remember him telling the Proud Boys to stand by during a presidential debate. I remember him proudly saying he could sexually assault women, and then being convicted for it. I also remember him being convicted for fraud.

Its not cities. Trump is asking Iran to nuke the USMC, the Sixth Fleet, the Navy SEALS and the largest community of retired military in the world. That’s San Diego. Why would he use SD instead of traditional bogey SF?

I don’t understand what point these guys think they’re making. As always, Trump is having it both ways—fantasize with me about blue state cities being nuked, which we would never allow, even though they deserve it for opposing me and my war. It’s not difficult to parse.

His fans hear “Imagine nuking L.A.,” Very Serious Reporters hear “Imagine what terrible things could have happened if we had let Iran have the bomb,” and it’s mission accomplished

In the context of Trump's Nebraska rally speech, which Aaron was following live and posting on Bluesky, the "cities" line was shocking to me at that time. Trump's goal was "entertaining" his base. Trump was joking that Iran bombing LA would be a good thing. His audience laughed. It's inexcusable.

He makes abject fools out of anyone who defends him, and they still do it, time and time again. Giving the benefit of the doubt to this monster, who would clearly love to see violence and destruction in blue cities, I’m just smdh all day long.

To those defending him by recycling the word "could" from his lead-in statement, what this dangerous despot said was: "Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego." These targeted, spiteful words are incitement from a POTUS who has sought to punish blue states & sanctuary cities.

Misquoting as “Trump invites Iran to nuke cities” actually strengthens trumps victimhood narrative. Stick to direct quotes with context. He says enough crazy stuff, you don’t need to misquote it .

Misquoting him is one thing. Pretzeling his remarks to gaslight everyone into thinking he didn’t mean to say what he said is infuriating. It’s part of a decades-long the ongoing normalization of an insane person they are too scared to call insane.

TY. I’m not gonna act like he said something he didn’t just because I hate him. It’s like when gun reform activists say “what if it was your loved one who got shot?”. Yes, it is a horrifying theoretical, but it is NOT the same as saying “hey bad guy please come shoot this person’s loved one”.

This is the real shit. No one is talking about him saying the same thing about Mobile when he was in Mobile. Because he phrased it differently and the reactionaries are fine with Mobile vs California because that feeds the political narrative. He's repeating it now yeah because it generated clicks

This has always been a GOPnik thing, too—remember even before the “Macaca moment” how Bill “Book of Virtues” Bennett said incredibly racist things and then claimed he was “taken out of context”? That was always their go-to when called out for their overt bigotry…

Even the most favorable interpretation of his remarks can't ignore the fact that he got the audience to cheer the idea of murdering millions on Americans for being (or perceived as, since San Diego is a military town) as Democrat voters.

Oh for the day when people expected presidents to know how to speak clearly and understand the consequences of their words. At any level, no matter how one tries to dress it up, it’s disqualifying behavior.

Hydrogen bombs can be thousands of times more powerful than A-bombs. Elon Musk knows this. He’s lying because he WANTS old-circus-peanut-penis to use them.

if 9/11 happened today there’s a decent number of americans who would view it as an attack on their enemies.

And I bet the line will become part of his rally schtick up until the mid-terms. He'll like that his followers get excited about the possibility two California cities getting nuked and he gets satisfaction from saying outrageous things and having pundits ruminate about what he really meant.
