There is absolute giddiness among NGOs that we are on the cusp of some radical transformation of the immigration system, including abolishing ICE. Most people know the inside baseball game much better than I do, but I am, in a word, skeptical. Going big is great, but remember what country we're in.

For example, just to name one thing. Yes, polling on support for ICE is very low. I am doubtful (and eager to be proven wrong) that this is either a sustainable or uniquely actionable reality. American's attention spans are low and anger with ICE now does not necessarily mean sustained concern.

I do want to pre-empt one criticism of this post that might say that I'm dampening real enthusiasm. Maybe. But we shouldn't pretend that there is zero cost to overshooting, either, and my role is much more as a researcher than advocate. This is a diagnosis based on history, not a prognosis.

The point about overshooting, while I disagree, is at least valid. The cheap dodge that you’re just a smol bean researcher is horseshit. If you weren’t an advocate on a personal level you wouldn’t be talking about it

I mean, I have been an advocate, and I am an advocate from time to time I guess. But the point about overshooting I think is just that we don’t get a shot at every single thing all the time and so we will have to make decisions about focus.

I'm trying to be tepid in my enthusiasm because I remember that while Congress always, as a whole, polls like shit, individual Congressmen poll well. Everybody hates Congress, but not THEIR person. I just doubt we're going to see the change in unexpected places because of this dichotomy.

I feel like living in this country and doing this work means embracing the dichotomy of radical aspirational hope and the slog of pragmatic change.

Yes, everything is sorta compelling, all of the proposed frameworks that are coming out and I hope they translate to real movement (ACLU, AIC, NILC, etc).

a country of immigrants. That's the country we're in. we remember. It's literally impossible to overshoot. That's the half measure conservatives democratic party response nonsense that fails to please anyone. How can you overshoot "treat our neighbors like equal human beings?"
