What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

Incredible

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

A new report on truancy in D.C. says that some Latino students are truant because the increased presence of ICE, other federal agents, and National Guard had "negative impact on their families." One kid said he was "genuinely afraid to step outside" after his dad was deported.

Targeted universalism will also be a key policy design feature if the Trump Admin’s heinous public charge rules move forward

JW Mason@jwmason.bsky.social

This is a great example of targeted universalism. That's a term that sounded like an oxymoron to me when I first heard it, but makes sense when you think about it. We can roll out a program without any means tests, but in a way that takes into account who needs it most. gothamist.com/news/these-a...

An ICE officer shot and wounded a man today around 4:00 in Manhattan. Exact details are still coming in. I'm not seeing any further information other than that the man is at a hospital now.

Ok I did a quick derivative analysis of this YouGov poll. Lots of people know that ICE has killed people, but lots don’t know! It appears that: -71% of Abolish ICE supporters have heard of recent ICE killings -60% of Abolish opponents have heard -only 45% of “don’t knows” have heard of ICE killings

maria_from_ga@mariafromga.bsky.social

Today’s NYT Opinions Podc had Solis Anderson say the question to abolish ICE or reform it will be a upcoming fracture in Dem politics…….lol Maybe the DNC saw the poll where Abolish ICE was +8 among citizens and +65 among Dems. ICE is going the way of “military aid to Israel” lol

Takeaway: this isn’t causal analysis, but the YouGov poll is consistent with the story that people move towards Abolish as they gain awareness of ICE killings. And that there are lots of people who have yet to gain awareness

This is appalling. Apparently some of the people ICE is arresting at airports have not violated ANY law; their period of lawful status has been extended, yet ICE appears to have old data and is arresting people based on stale information.

AILA@aila.org

AILA's Kate Angustia "said it’s a 'misconception' that the people being arrested at airports let their visas expire and therefore forfeited their legal status. 'Many of these folks are in a lawful period of authorized stay.'" https://bit.ly/4z9ZxQE

This paper shows that immigration enforcement can _increase_ crime. Undocumented immigrants already have the lowest crime rate, but tough-on-immigration policy makes immigrants less likely to report crime. So immigration enforcement worsens the problem it was ostensibly meant to solve

We are a city of immigrants, and our long tradition of offering safe haven to all, as well as our laws, reflect that. To every immigrant New Yorker living in fear today: you belong here. And anyone who wants to come for you will have to come through your neighbors and fellow New Yorkers first.

IMPORTANT to know that the vast majority of Haitians with TPS entered the country legally at ports of entry, not illegally. The majority have NEVER violated the law. The admin stripped their status by breaking the law, but today SCOTUS says courts can't do anything about that.
