So now there are two main European atproto providers (PDS and client), one is open source and one is closed source. Very concerned that the EU talks about how important OSS is, and then they pick the closed source one :/

One is non-profit, the other for-profit, too. EU picked for-profit over non-profit social good, that was recommended to them by the JRC report I just shared.

Eurosky isn't non-profit last I checked.

I think it is fair to call it a nonprofit given the restrictions on profit distribution and the purpose requirements. The fact it's a stichting and not a BV/NV is significant imo If you have stricter requirements to count something as a nonprofit, we are disagreeing about terms

I think I probably meant "not for profit" not "non-profit" there, which is a pretty easy mistake to make, but yes, Eurosky is part of Stichting Modal (Modal Foundation). I always get these mixed up especially when tired

Yep, I'd agree with "not for profit". I wish they'd consider signing up for a public benefit status, which would let them be tax exempt and signal a stronger commitment to the goal, or even comment on the topic instead of avoiding the question whenever I brought it up.

I'll let @sherif.eurosky.social respond but I suspect it's complicated even though the form looks short; I know for instance Mastodon GmbH lost their non-profit status at some point in Germany even though they have the 501(c)3 in the US, and it was some German specific tax thing about donations iirc

I'm aware of the situation with Mastodon (g)GmbH. I'd rather Eurosky: - have an FAQ item etc on why they cannot get an ANBI or similar status, if they cannot. - be honest that the model of english word "non-profit" does not fit cleanly into a dutch foundation, and ideally use "not for profit".
