Oh yeah, sure. That's what they tell the people they don't toke up with. I bought weed from a guy who told his kids that until he could no longer deal weed after it was legalized in DC. "I used to smoke pot in college" is a common lie told by people who still smoke weed.

Free-range parenting and lax drug enforcement meant cheap and available booze/drugs. The legal drinking was 18 in 1980 in most states. We were treated more like adults as high school seniors than college seniors are today.

"Forbidden fruit" has a lot to do with it. It's far more socially acceptable to smoke marijuana now than it was in the 1980s, so there's less cache or 'street cred' from doing it as a teenager. Since most of their (grand)parents are from the 1980s and 1990s, drinking isn't as cool as it was then.

Well it took like four generations but it appears the Generation Gap has thankfully returned to popular culture. Maybe now Hot Topic will stop selling bootleg shirts of my 80s punk band.

Partly that, but also because it's not a "forbidden fruit" like it used to be. There's less motivation to "look cool" by doing it. A lot of parents nowadays believe in teaching kids to drink responsibly, meaning they allow moderate alcohol use under adult supervision. (Where's the fun in that?)

HS teacher here. I think it is right. Social media has probably diminished the amount social drinking and drug use. But kids are also generally less risk takers than they were when I was young. The drop in teen driving (and teens getting cars) is probably also related somehow. Vaping though…
