A lot of folks who thought the internet was a waste of time are now buying shit off Amazon dot com multiple times a week. You're not gonna get left behind. You'll just feel a little silly. (I say this as someone who does not shop on Amazon dot com. The point stands.)

assuming this is about AI, i disagree that people who don’t like using it are going to feel silly? these two things don’t seem comparable to me

i guess that without any context, the way i read this was “you won’t get left behind, but you’ll feel silly for not having used it” and that’s what i disagree with 😅

that being said, i do think large swaths of the industry _are_ actively trying to leave behind the people who would otherwise prefer not to engage with LLMs

counterpoint: software developers will absolutely get left behind left behindedness is a function of proximity to automation leverage as your income source imo. combining this shift with the post-ZIRP contraction is a brutal neck though the platform growth on the other side may provide some relief

I like to believe that people will choose to learn these tools and catch up quickly. I have a friend who bought his first smartphone in 2023. He wouldn't describe himself as left behind. He just chose not to use the tech until he wanted it. And I think something kinda similar will happen here.

The only difference is that it'll be hard for folks to find work in tech if they choose to not engage. But is that "getting left behind" or is that opting out?

it’s probably a bit of both. but I think the trouble is that it’s not clear that it’s opting out there’s this pervasive fantasy that any amount of it can stay how it was meanwhile I’ve never in my life seen such a vertiginous acceleration toward new tools and processes
