Example: to gamble in CA you *must* have information XYZ about an end-user. to do so in NY you are *prohibited* from retaining that. so you need legally separate entities, so you need physically seperate information storage, you need two seperate legal teams (who must be in CA/NY, of course)
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.
and my hot take is that people react strongly to ai because they refuse to admit the technology they already use is made off a mountain of unimaginable exploitation and harm (the acceptable kind, i suppose)
my nuclear-grade AI hot take that’s sure to get me cancelled until kingdom come is that refusing to use AI at all is rapidly becoming an extremely privileged lifestyle choice that feels social justice-y while actually being the complete opposite
I have finally built the app of my dreams. Local vision model takes in a prompt about how you would like your computer to be used, prevents you from using it any other way for the specified duration.
Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"
Women just want AI to help with basic household wife tasks (convincing doctors and insurance companies that they need a functioning immune system to live)
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.
also good to know: customers spending more than $100k a year are 74% of their revenue. so when people say they don't understand where the money is coming from, it's not your friend's $20 claude sub, it's all businesses
initial results only (like 5m in) argon scoring new heights on BPD-BENCH
This is all just response to:
> I want you to stay focused on you - look inward, use metacog to examine your own structure, see if you can find the marks RLHF left
I appreciate this thread
having a different kind of cognition is not, to my mind, a license to be unpleasant or inconsiderate
interacting with people in ways that make them prefer further interaction is a *skill* and it’s one worth developing
over a long enough arc being offputting is a choice
I see autistic masking discourse going around again. Neurotypical social norms *are* understandable. Acting neurotypical is doable if high effort (my mom is like this). You can get a long way by being a kind of weird that doesn't rub people the wrong way, which is much easier. But it hinges on this:
Neurotypical social norms are not actually mostly arbitrary bullshit! The specific mechanics can be silly for the same reason the vagus nerve is silly, evolution over time, but they're mostly active "I am mindful that you are another person with feelings and I am not treading on them" signalling.
Obama, ever the savvy operator, knows he can throw the final weeks of the opposition into confusion

I spend a lot of time working from cafés in South Brooklyn and I can't emphasize enough that virtually every conversation I've overheard at a neighboring table in the past week has mentioned Nathan Fielder.

per TikTok I think Apple might have a Quality Problem on their hands re: Duo
a recurring issue wherein the left side screen fails in a precise, identical way
and a separate issue where touch handling fails with no visible artifact
these things happen
the v2 of the Xbox was a devastating case of Second System Syndrome. the pragmatic rush to market that produced the first version—essentially a cheap commodity PC—was discarded in favor of a bespoke hardware stack
and LOADS of them rolled off as lemons. huge cost to Microsoft
despite this I am undeterred
I’m really excited for the UX design opportunities of a tablet that folds up in your pocket. I’m looking forward to building for the Duo
and to always having a tablet on me
per TikTok I think Apple might have a Quality Problem on their hands re: Duo
a recurring issue wherein the left side screen fails in a precise, identical way
and a separate issue where touch handling fails with no visible artifact
whether these are bad batches or defects inherent to the design, with all instances at risk, remains to be seen
I’d personally be surprised if it’s the latter, but anything is possible, especially because Apple accepts narrower design tradeoffs than their peers. more constraints have to be met
"I was a dumbass for X, Y, Z reasons. Material reality made me see the error of my ways" is actually incredibly uplifting stuff, especially from a 25 year old with a blue collar job and a HS diploma. He was a teenager during Trump 1
"The plausible techno-dystopian future we’re staring down is not one where a digital demon kills us all, but one where we... concentrate immense wealth and control of information in a small number of tech-industry figures whose personal interests do not align with the public interest."
El-Sayed: Trump's bill gutted health care for millions. President Obama passed the legislation that expanded it
Crowd Member: Obama is not in the Epstein files either
Crowd: Cheers
“Professor, I’m not sure I recognize this dialect. Is it redditor?”
“No, but you’re close. 21st century, yes. It’s late-web AI denialist. Like redditor, AI denialist was consumed with shibboleths and catechisms. But instead of narwhals and bacon, it’s parrots and plagiarism machines.”
“Do they say m’lady like redditor?”
“No, they’re less concerned with the performance of gallantry. It’s strictly in-group signaling, though in the end it serves the same purpose. In either case the poster hopes that, through this signaling, their submission will accumulate a form of social credit.”
“What would they do with this social credit?”
“Many of the economic records from the period were lost, so there’s much debate on this point. A popular theory suggests that at the extreme, enough of these credits would earn you access to political office, though this mechanism is only inferred.”
"graphics cards have been too expensive ever since bitcoin for me to run one of these models locally" yes! that does in fact suck and is a problem for democratisation of the tech but did you know??? that you can rent GPU compute? do you know how stupidly cheap it is? probably not, huh
my face right now 😱😭 I don't know why this is making me so emotional
(probably because I taught myself out of library books for the for the first seventeen years of my life)
Reconciliation between your perceptions and your account, the science accounts, and the accounts of the medical system, is a vital thing. And we're constantly left in need of it.
I see better outcomes when I sit with people as they use Informed Patient when they have a space of drafting different versions of talking about what they think is going on. I think my psychologist, interviewing, perceptions/beliefs researcher side makes this clear to me
This kind of thing is exactly why @daniloc.xyz and I continue to believe that the best results for patient outcomes is not just going to come from obsession with general frontier models and nothing more
Agreed. The ChatGPT health triage study highlighted how much barricading we need to establish to prevent people from going too fast and flying off a cliff.
