But that's exactly my point, if BlueSky was more decentralized (It has plans, it could get there) it would be less of a target. My point wasn't to say "BlUesKy iS StUpId" but to say "it's putting itself in a bind because it's not as decentralized as it wants to be. @goose.art

i will get hate for this but: all posts on here are public anyway. it is important to verify this account so people know specifically it is real and they shouldnt fuck with it fact that it is the most blocked account is a good sign everything is working well, banning it would make bluesky a target

It’s not up to Bluesky. It’s up to other people if they want to run microblog apps. ATProto is already there. Anyone can create an account, including governments. They can host them themselves. Different apps will or will not use verification records. We’re already there.

If you’d like to define what decentralize means without “a clone of Bluesky that looks like Mastodon servers” we can have that discussion. Blacksky, NorthSky, EuroSky, Gander, Red Dwarf aren’t Bluesky clones. Tangled, Smoke Signal, Leaflet, Semble, aren’t microblogging.

And that is great! I'm just saying that with the VAST majority of active users on the main centralized server, they have a target on their back. The faster they get more accounts on these servers, the easier their life will be.

It’s not up to Bluesky. “They” is the community and projects I listed. Please use the term ATProto and help us. Highlight what the community is doing. That’s why I’m putting time into the open @atprotocol.dev ecosystem, just like you are volunteering your time.

Thanks for being patient with me, I'm clearly misunderstanding the difference between "ATProto" and "BlueSky". It's a bit confusing. I thought servers like NorthSky were (at a high level) like servers on Mastodon, you could have an account on either one. Do I have that wrong?

Accounts are separate from apps. Bluesky hosts ATProto accounts and defines a microblog format. NorthSky right now is just ATProto account hosting, with plans to build an app, & adding features like privacy. NorthSky now run a PDS server that only hosts accounts.

You can use your ATProto account - wherever it’s hosted - to login to any app. My best analogy right now is that this is like iCloud. Yes Bluesky hosts most accounts. ATProto community is hosting more every day. This is an intro post to the protocol mackuba.eu/2025/08/20/i...

So: I could self host an account on a PDS on my desk, use the Deer Social app (which lets me ignore Bluesky verifications), and use the Bluesky appview (index of microblog posts) - all without ever “signing up” with Bluesky. And I can swap any of those at my option.
