Remember when Microsoft released Windows 8.2 as an update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 9 “existed”. Thank you Microsoft’s Bing and Copilot Search for being truly helpful!

When the ACER laptop I'm typing on was brand new, it came with Windows 8.2 installed. I upgraded to Windows 9 shortly thereafter and installed my old copy of Office 2003 on it from CD-ROM. How old it that? Still works fine, though the keyboard could use a good cleaning.

I remember Windows 9. Not many people heard of it because they kept confusing it with windows 95 and 98 thinking they were advanced versions of it. Didn't help that Microsoft went back to the 95 era design language.

I remember the nightmare of Windows ME . I had just bought my first new PC. It was supposed to come with Windows. XP pre-installed. Instead we got an installation disc for Windows ME . One of the worst versions ever in my opinion.

Through my university, I have the “pro” Copilot license. It is utterly bizarre how wrong Copilot gets things about Microsoft products, even current ones…and not esoteric questions either.

Windows 9 actually existed... twice! (95 and 98 are called "9" behind the scenes for interoperability) So the reason they skipped straight from 8 to 10 was because presumably, otherwise tons of apps would think they ran on Windows 95 and switch to compatibility mode / refuse to start.

I don't recall that (I stayed on 7 for as long as possible) but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Apple contributed to the quirk, with how they tend to bundle their networking code (Bonjour) and auto-updater.

The problem with win 9, was the coding to block installations of version of 9x applications and drivers, so the installs failed horribly out of the box, and the amount of base code they would have to patch was too expensive, and would re-open the door for legacy apps.
