I'm losing my patience with GitHub. Both the constant outages and constant lying piss me off.

You are not forced to use github. It isnt a monopoly. There is codeberg, tangled if you are interested in something using atproto, self-hosting with forgejo, gitea. You have options.

So stop whinging and leave github in the dirt, where it belongs 🙃 If you know all these things, take action. I dont know why you wouldnt.

Because it's more complicated than just that. I'm primarily angry about my company's use of it. We pay GitHub decent money for shit service and it'd be a large/tedious/disruptive project to move off. Tendrils everywhere. But yes: we'll probably have to move. Annoying distraction.

The monthly transparency reports are a good thing because you can see both what the causes of issues are (beyond “my god you people are checking in a lot more code”) and why they can’t just throw capacity at a distributed system to fix it) Reliability is the priority over everything but security

My "lying" is referring to their status dashboard, as pictured. They're very slow/reluctant to admit problems even after the internet is abuzz about them.

Ahh, I missed that. Yeah, statuses are almost always declared manually by humans (AFAIK), and generally after datadog alerts have triggered, which look at the last 5-15 minutes of data. So it's a laggy process that should probably be a lot more automated, especially for obvious stuff like 500s.

I'll talk to my team, at least, about automating this for the things that are clear signals - like significant increases in 500s being seen by end users. In Copilot's case in particular (the only one I can really speak to) there's a lot of noise thrown in there by LLM providers randomly going down.

Automatically updating the status for user-visible endpoints is a no-brainer imho. The question to ask is why don't the humans have the confidence in the alerting system to let it do that? Problem that needs fixing

Their actions pipeline outage in Australia this week makes us consider moving our codebase to Gitlab - doubly frustrating as we just moved to GitHub from Bitbucket 🤦‍♂️

Sure - we may not like this as paying customers - but think of the JIRA metrics! How poorly would it have reflected on teams if they didn’t rush out buggy software on a Friday. The sprint closes tonight!
