my pratt typography students are bringing in their first posters for crit today i gave them the text palette and image for paula scher’s legendary bring in da funk poster but they’ve never seen it before will show them her version after the crit ✨

It went good I think! Everyone’s posters were much more conservative than Scher’s so when we looked Scher’s after I think it stretched their brains a little. I revealed it in the context of showing them Scher’s Ted Talk so they also got a dose of her history and philosophy…

…the program at Pratt is very cross disciplinary focusing equally on illustration and design. I spent a lot of time trying to break down the wall in their minds between the two. When people who self identify as illustrators and put design in a box they limit their typographic potential imo…

…There are so many lessons learned from practicing illustration that can be applied to practice designing, and vice versa, if we allow the information to flow freely from one to the other. Art school often inspires factionalism.

Thanks for sharing! I teach at a liberal arts university in MA, and most of my intro to graphic design or lettering class students are taking the class as their art requirement course so I try to a provide broad understanding of design principles, application, and experimentation

I try to find ways to highlight that they already have a lot of skills to be successful (close observation, critical analysis, etc.) and try to make design more approachable. Your assignment is perfect for my intro to gd class…might borrow it for the spring if that’s okay 😊
