"An ambulance was seen arriving at the prison where Pike was to be executed and then leaving. Medical aid was being administered, according to online federal court records." The utter absurdity of the state trying twice to kill someone and then calling an ambulance. We must end the death penalty.

It’s always puzzled me how the Constitution says everyone is equal under the law, but certain citizens can be put to death in one state but not another state for the exact same crime. Where is the equal treatment in that?

I used to think the death penalty made sense for the worst crimes. But it turns out the way the state carries out executions - no matter the method - is pretty well always horrific. It's not something a reasonable society should do. Compounding cruelty doesn't result in justice.

The Catholic Church agrees. Click to read how it says what you just did.

No death penalty. Citation. CCC 2267, Vatican (2018). "... Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that 'the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person',[1] and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide."

Wild. Almost beat by beat. Makes sense that it came from Pope Francis. My shift came about largely due to a piece by John Oliver / Last Week Tonight on the death penalty that made me radically rethink my assumptions. I did some research & thinking after, but he was the catalyst.

That's really not helpful. Murder is a crime, and should be prosecuted. The point being, misogyny meant that previous crimes were left unprosecuted, and the sentence for this crime was cruel, vindictive and wrong.

WTF? Not helpful? What this girl did was horrible. But, she was herself abused. Killed the person with 2 others- one of whom was 17 so escaped on a ‘technicality’ and the other cut a deal. I mean, all three should have faced the same consequences. And she should never have faced capital punishment .

No, double jeopardy means you can't be tried twice for the same crime. It doesn't mean that the sadistic, incompetent, vengeance-focused state can't keep trying to kill you. 8th amendment applies or it would if we had a legit Supteme Court.

Why not just use a rifle! There’s no botched execution with a bullet in the head. At this point i believe we want to make people suffer during a execution.

I'm no supporter of the death penalty. For many reasons she didn't deserve that sentence. She should have been left rotting in prison for life for what she did. Now they have made her a victim at the expense of her victim and in the name of alleged justice.

It's now 4 hours after the attempted execution, and we (including her lawyers) still don't know where she is or if she's alive. This is malpractice in so many ways by the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
