An amazing honor to give NIH’s WALS lecture today as the last speaker under the leadership of NIH Director Dr Monica Bertagnolli

when you get to host your bad ass brilliant ass PhD advisor @bita137.bsky.social as an invited speaker for the prestigious NIH Wednesday After Lecures Series 🤗🥰 grateful for our friendship that has developed after all these years 🙏🏽

For those interested in Arab contemporary writers, here is a partial list thenational.shorthandstories.com/best-arabic-...

Many people are understandably upset about this but keep in mind that winning a defamation lawsuit does not determine guilt or innocence - it could merely mean the jury decided that the defendant made a defamatory statement to a third party that caused harm to his reputation

So my first reaction was this too: if I was holding the mic I would have asked if Tommy would disavow rightwing extremists like Timothy McVeigh. But I was wrong. El-Sayed handled it much better: he went to positive principles, of separation of church and state. Amazing. bsky.app/profile/kevi...

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

He's getting close here, but I still think it'd be more instructive to ask the questioner his religion, not his name, and then ask if he has disavowed the terrorists who happen to share *his* religion.

Shameful. Sally Rooney is one of my favorite contemporary novelists. Trash America and American ways all you want but her books will continue to be published and sold by the American publishers and retailers

Una Mullally@unamullally.bsky.social

Sally Rooney's books will no longer be distributed by Faber & Faber due to her support for Palestine Action. This is absurd, and part of a broader ludicrousness in British society where solidarity with Palestine is punished in increasingly nonsensical ways, while genocide goes unpunished.

Now out in Nature Comms! Grace DiRisio & @cxue.bsky.social's work spurred new directions for us, suggesting very different neural codes for one shot learning vs. attention/working memory/decision-making, with translational implications. Stay tuned! 🧪🧠🥳 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Greetings from the "Alzheimer room" at the LMU Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in München This is the very room where Dr. Alois Alzheimer had his microscopy and brain anatomy laboratory setup and, one can argue, where a biological foundation for a brain disorder was first discovered

What do these universities have in common? They apparently issue too many J-1 visas, which Vance claims is at "the expense of American graduate students and researchers" J-1 visas are used mostly for 2-3 yr hiring of international postdocs (not students) This will harm our scientific productivity

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."

Serotonin biology as a basis for explaining psychedelic drug action - I learned a lot writing this review with @neuroknox.bsky.social www.cell.com/current-biol... We know a good deal about serotonin, which should teach us how psychedelics work. But what’s the same? What’s different? 🤔

Please check out my futuristic opinion piece in @jamapsychiatry.com "specific treatments for schizophrenia that are tailored to target symptoms at different developmental stages are no longer the stuff of science fiction, but instead are realistic future goals" jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Reading a review on serotonin by Peter Dayan and Quentin J.M. Huys from 2009. It's an increasingly rare experience in this LLM-blighted era to read a paper with good prose.

Minor point but I really hate this performative “y’all” people do to try and appear more folksy. I don’t type in a Yorkshire accent and I did people would rightly tell me to shut up.

I noticed a paper in Nature Neurosci this week that seemed familiar but old🧐 And then I realized I'd seen the complete study presented at @acnporg.bsky.social in 2021🤯 Science is moving faster than ever so the choice to publish in glam mags is becoming silly if it takes this long to publish data

This isn’t a dig against @jenbussell.bsky.social. Her study is fantastic. But the multiple comments here from senior neuroscientists tripping over themselves to endorse mouse over nonhuman primate models as “better neuroscience” just because “more tools exist” is problematic to say the least.
