My toxic trait is that I simply want to spend 100-500 dollars on high quality versions of things that are usually 50-80

AI has been extremely helpful for this because google searches and reddit threads always end up in the "XYZ is the best Thing at a reasonable price" territory but i just want THE BEST THING for any price

i bought a $200 pillow from Purple like 8 years ago which people generally considered a large waste of money because pillows should be $10-30 but I'm excited to use it every night and as far as i can tell it hasnt degraded in quality or thickness and i love it

My rule is to find the thing I really want, then find the thing that delivers 80% of the value at 20% of the price. But this only works if (a) that thing exists and (b) yeah...you see the problem.

i’m like this with things that really matter atp. i’m happy to spend 20 bucks a pair of socks when those socks last 4+ years without holes and i can wear them thrice before washing. but that threshold is rather high to break thru my midwesternish

15 years ago, i was doing that same thing - and now i've got good kitchen appliances from before the build quality of zojirushi and kitchenaid dropped. you'll rarely regret paying a little extra to get something that lasts longer as long as you can afford it.
