Today’s was the easiest, most open ended prompt ever (“something with a story behind it”) and I got complete writer’s block so uhh… rabbit

Timelapse for this one is fun. I used the @coreybrickley.bsky.social trick of grabbing a silhouette off the reference image and then deleting it (and working from the reference pane instead). Helps me start confidently but leaves enough gaps that I have to actually Observe (like you’re sposed’ta)

Also used the old art school trick of starting to block in details with both the canvas and the reference upside down (forces you to observe rather than draw standard eye/nose shapes from memory) and uhhh it did not work for the eye placement, this time (quickly scribbled away)

My method for putting down facial landmarks is trash and very brittle when it comes to harder angles, but I’ve had a hell of a time learning a good System. As you can see I barely sketch and instead… whittle? partially because I’ve been drawing digitally for so long and I can get away with it

Lastly, the neon underpainting is something I saw an amazing acrylic painter do and it just makes life fun. I’d love to find them again. They do plein air type paintings of prosaic western/southwestern scenes with bright pink underpainting, often featuring cars and trucks

I’ve seen this kind of underpainting for miniature painting but haven’t tried it because it completely breaks my brain that it actually works. Making art is so cool

You will be unsurprised that Gemini interrupted my search for this painter to fully make up a guy whose name is two letters off from a real painter and super doesn’t exist

It’s something I have to practice very deliberately like I’m going to the gym. Usually you start by focusing on sort of key shapes and lining elements up. For example, the space between the left arm and body, or where the chin is relative to the line of the shoulder.

And i think everyone has details they're comfortable making up compared to places they have to lean on the reference. I always prefer a photo reference for human anatomy, then I can kinda-sorta make up clothes (I'm getting better, anyway) and turning the hair into snake tubes i can just fake
