This interview with Melanie Buggey, who just swam across the Georgia Strait besting a 60-year world record, has me in absolute stitches. What an icon lolll www.cbc.ca/radio/asitha...

Oh gods, that f you haven’t gone and listened to it on their page, do!! I heard it driving home and it was so funny to hear these serious interview q’s and the answers were just hilariously…not following the traditional script, let’s say.

As It Happens is a GEM of a radio show. Highly recommend. They don't always have stubborn athletes talking about puking, but they do deliver weird/interesting/topical content on the regular. Grew up listening to the show and it a Canadian institution for a reason.

I heard it. Just hilarious. Yep, it was all bad. Nope, never even considered stopping. Also loved the bit where she talked about deliberately gaining weight, during training, to help against hypothermia, which, in the end, was not really a problem. Whole thing was delightful.

How long do you think it's going to take you to fully recover from something this intense? I don't think I've recovered from childhood, so probably never, but I could get back in the pool in a day or two if I was keen on swimming, which incidentally, as it turns out, I don't think I am right now.

i love how humble and negative she is haha, it’s awesome to see someone capable of such a great feat just be super down to earth about it and leaving out none of the gross details haha

I just read some more about her. I probably could have managed this part: "To prepare, Buggey spent months eating high-calorie foods to pack on 30 pounds for warmth, as the rules of an unassisted swim does not allow for the use of wetsuits."
