One of the things I’m really struggling with about what’s going on in Minnesota is that if you describe what’s going on in plain, factual ways to someone who’s not paying close attention you sound completely, bugfuck crazy

Minnesota: "School officials say the [5-year-old] child was used as bait. They say [ICE] agents made little Liam knock on the door to ask to be let in in order to see if anyone else was home."

I have avoided talking about any of this with my father as I'm afraid any response short of "I'm disgusted and outraged and regret every vote I've cast for Republicans my entire life" will just fill me with rage and lead me to cut him out of my life.

Smarter people than I have made this point, but it's the same structural advantage built into GOP politics writ large vis a vis "when undecided focus groups are told point blank what's in the typical national republican agenda, they simply don't believe it to be true."

I'm not being glib when I say: I imagine that's very similar to how refugees from Nazi-controlled Europe felt when they tried to tell the world about what was happening during the holocaust.

“The federal government abducted a kid and used him as bait to try to lure out his parents, who are in the country legally, so they can be detained without charges and sent to Texas” Think about how ridiculous that sounds to someone who hasn’t been paying attention. It sounds like I made it up!
