“Her brother said he didn't see marks on Marin's neck at the hospital. As he took pictures, an immigration officer standing guard tried to make him leave the room and delete the photos. Hospital staff defended his right to stay in the hospital room, he said.” Barbarism.

Here is @emilybregel.bsky.social’s story. CW: self-harm 38yo Andreea Marin is brain dead on life support, her brother says, after not getting the medication she needed for her mental illness in ICE custody. Yet her wrists and ankles are chained to the hospital bed. tucson.com/news/local/b...

Trump's affordability message: "You could even come to Mar-a-Lago. You'll be my guest. The problem is that for $5,000 the most you'll be able to buy is a hamburger and maybe a small dessert. I'm not even sure you could buy that! No, don't go there. It's not a good place if you're price conscious."

Raskin: "When historians look back on this miserable period of our history, they might say that the first problem was disregarding all those women who told us back in 2016 that they had been sexually harassed or assaulted by Donald Trump."

There is truly nothing you could do to make fun of the NYT covering the Obama Cheesecake Factory quip instead of Trump being accused of rape. It’s completely beyond parody.

The Bolsonaro story is yet another example of why Dems must internalize that they'll need an international pro-democracy, anti-corruption, and anti-authoritarian agenda should they win the White House in 2028. They have no option but to embrace that fight, even as they push domestic priorities.

blocking just isn’t a super serious thing, it doesn’t have to be saved for a massive transgression “I didn’t enjoy interacting with this person on the internet” is a perfectly good reason now you won’t find each other annoying anymore, everyone wins

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

"You can't block someone just for being annoying!" Those are actually the most important people to block

As the midterms approach, I would just remind everyone that US politics has become increasingly parliamentary and that what matters most is the *number* of Ds or Rs, not the idiosyncrasies or ideological quirks of individual candidates. If you want D outcomes, vote D up & down the ticket.

Émile Darkheim reposted

Obama’s Cheesecake Factory decor joke is going to continue to get far more play in the media, days after it happened, than RFK Jr being openly racist. Draw your own conclusions about the press based on that.

There are credible allegations of rape against the president, and evidence his administration has taken steps to cover up his relationship with the world's most notorious pedophile. This story is being covered more aggressively by People Magazine than the NY Times, Wash Post, or Wall St Journal.

Jeremy Lewin killed hundreds of thousands without a signed employment agreement.

WIRED@wired.com

Despite the agency's human resources department saying he hadn’t even been onboarded, Jeremy Lewin oversaw the destruction of USAID. It’s not clear he had the legal authority to do so.

Young ‘uns: this stuff happened once a week during Obama’s presidency. Dijon mustard. Moving a bust of Churchill. Inviting a rapper to the White House. Putting his feet up on his desk. They’d scream and cry for days about how effete and snobby and Black he was and how misinderstood they were.

You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

before the election, doing dogpile coverage on Trump's heavily documented and extremely plausible rape allegations would be Political and therefore improper. after the election it's time to turn the page, let bygones be bygones, look forward not backward, bsky.app/profile/hoff...

There are corners in the American media that are excellent as well as phenomenal independent journalists such as @marisakabas.bsky.social. But "prestigious" media orgs such as the NYT and WaPo and "prestigious" media beats such as national politics and tech are actively harming American democracy.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

the actual reason is that the media likes Trump and wants to help him. They didn't like Hillary and they didn't like Biden and wanted to hurt them. That explains why Hillary's emails was covered as a nuclear-level scandal and "Trump is a violent rapist who is best friends with Jeff Epstein" isn't

This accords well with my overarching theory that the best way to ruin something — universities, career fields, literature, cuisine, movies, TV, etc. — and turn it into garbage is to make it "prestigious".

Émile Darkheim reposted

Replying to @mtsw.bsky.social

Yes exactly. Hard to be juicier than this! A violent sex scandal connected with America's most notorious criminal and they're like "nah we'll pass, time to run another beat sweetener on Rubio instead." They just like Trump and want to help him. bsky.app/profile/plan...

Also "the reason they like Trump is because he gives them juicy stories that sell papers"

Émile Darkheim reposted

"there's no new information in this report so it's not news" say the same news media who plastered front pages with "duplicate hillary emails found on laptop" like it was a nuclear-level scandal a week before the 2016 election

Judd Legum@juddlegum.bsky.social

1. Not sure when a new, on-the-record rape allegation against a sitting president isn’t considered news — especially considering Trump was found liable by a jury in a similar case — but it was ignored by most mainstream media outlets

Émile Darkheim reposted

i hope if nothing else, the media ignoring this finally stops people from saying "the reason the media doesn't run drumbeat scandal coverage on trump the way they did on Clinton is because Dems don't make a big deal of it like Republicans do"

The citizen who yelled "Shove that ballroom up your fat ass" is, in this hard time, a patriot. Honestly, what is left to say about this level of misrule? What careful critique hasn't been already offered? What reasoned response to this full-on run at fascism and kleptocracy remained unspoken?
