thanks, not the most fun part of the job but definitely necessary to ensure the commons and level playing field

This reminds me (a little) about the issue last year with Linkerd being maintained by a single vendor and the drama that came around that. Was there any learning outcome / changes from that to help avoid vendors getting a stronghold on a project like that?

Very different situation. Linkerd is fully open source and has been since its inception. We’ve played by the CNCF rules. If anyone wants to reduce someone else’s “stronghold” on Linkerd they just need to step up and get involved. I will never apologize for paying maintainers 💪

Yeah, stronghold was the wrong word. I couldn’t think how to phrase it. The “do-ocracy” phrase Chris used is more apt. Those who show up and do the work do get the influence. I am completely onboard with those people being paid for that work, nothing to apologise for there at all.

also very commendable, transparent and very smart of Bouyant for pushing forward on a hard problem, it’s not easy and I sympathize with any vendor trying to build a business around an open source project, kudos

linkerd still followed the IP rules of the foundation and Apache 2.0 open source license... I'm happy their changes worked out better for the business and project!

...the challenge is projects tend to be a "do-cracy" as in people who show up and do the work get influence... the only thing we've found that really helps with improving diversity over time is multiple products/vendors based on upstream and mentorships www.cncf.io/blog/2024/11...

I confirm mentorship is a great way to have more diverse projects and grow maintainers list. If we had not invested so much in it in the past years, after the Postman layoffs, AsyncAPI would fall. We also started experimenting with special mentorship, which is called "Maintainership".
