Yeah ._. hell my family wasn't even *in* this country when that shit was happening--all my ancestors got here 1915 to 1940--but it MORTIFIES me that we benefitted in any way from these hideous ill-gotten gains. Imagine attending a dinner and finding out AFTER THE FACT you've been fed human flesh >.<
Funding of such a museum would be something like the funding of the deportation monument in France (one day, we'll have one for the United States). It'd also be as controversial. It might not be part of the Smithsonian. Mostly, it'd be worthwhile. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9...
My great grandmother is the only non-white person in my ancestry. Mom's side is English/German and Dutch. My dad's side is English/Irish and English/Blackfoot Indian. I've been lucky to see many species white invaders slaughtered (fishers, mink, bobcats, coyotes). I saw Bison north of Winnipeg in 85
A mountain of Bison skulls from bison butcherers like Buffalo Bill Cody who was paid by the American government to kill and leave to rot in the sun of the American prairies. It was genocide to deprive nations like the Sioux or my distant Blackfoot Confederacy ancestors of food, clothing and shelter.
Bisons i guess? Europeans ( yeah u guys were immigrants) almost extincted them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America...
Germany took responsibility for the genocide it created in more ways than one and they allowed the world to know about it. But not the US. It’s not ready to admit the nation was build on theft, genocide and racisim. This is why skin color is a big disruptive issue as is immigration and little changes
It would be best if there was one museum dedicated to the many genocides throughout history. Select one exhibit to be featured each year in a rotating fashion. This way nobody gets to claim perpetual victimhood.
Genocide both intentional and unintentional. The first colonies were able to get a foothold because the colonists noticed evidence of abandoned settlements, decimated tribes, due to epidemic disease introduced unknowingly by first contact. It would be like attacking Europe during the Black Death times
The genocide of Indigenous people is the foundation on which the unaccountable persona of the United States was laid. bsky.app/profile/mari...
American history is replete with evil deeds whose perpetrators are known, but for which no one was held accountable. And calls for reparations and restitution by the victims and their descendants are persistently rebuked Without accountability America's psychological baggage just keeps growing 2/2
The Canadian Museum of Human Rights in my city has two permanent galleries - The Holocaust and genocide of Indigenous People in Canada. We've called it what it is but that doesn't change that our current government is sill engaging in it. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
