Canada’s new grocery benefit does nothing to address the root cause of high food prices: corporate greed “All levels of government continue to ignore their regulatory responsibilities, enabling unchecked price-gouging on essentials like food and housing.”

We gave up on ‘Canada’s grocery store’ Sobeys. They have way too much US produce and I have previously reported mislabeling of items. It’s so close to me but I won’t shop there anymore

Governments around the world answer to the rich. Billionaires are the cancer that is destroying this planet. Not just the US and Canada. Name me one country that panders to billionaires that has a thriving working class. I'll wait.

“Regulatory responsibilities” needs a price mechanism attached: which rule changes the shelf price of groceries, and by how much? Otherwise the benefit is a transfer layered onto the same inflated checkout total.

Reminds me of the lack of regulation of the housing market, while we all stood by and watched prices climb for years that never came back down.

Plus the new grocery benefit which replaced the carbon rebate+gst rebate is less. So not only are Canadians receiving less money with the grocery benefit, food costs more due to corporate greed.

Corporate greed is sacred. (Ask a university ayatollah of the Holy Economy.) Here, even the sky is not the limit. Challenging the greedy timeless financial elite is blasphemous!, according to the ‘science’ of believing in it with heart and wallet.

So why did corporations suddenly become more greedy vs the prior years? Perhaps supply problems and exchange rate fluctuations are actually the culprit.

Profit margins at major Canadian grocery stores have increased since before Covid. Landlords also increased rents significantly since before Covid. It’s GREED — and our politicians are enabling it.
