NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in its history after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. That was defense. What Trump wants is NATO to join in offense. In a war he started.

FWIW Article 1 of the NATO treaty is very explicit about its members undertaking to settle international disputes by peaceful means as set forth in the Charter of the United Nations, which this war epitomizes the violation of.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but NATO is a defensive alliance: it's activated when one of its members is attacked by another country. Member states have no obligation to one another to support an illegal war of choice. And NATO was "there for us" when 🇺🇸 invoked Article 5 after 9/11.

Iran might be wily enough to realize that if they were to commit a terrorist attack on the U.S., it would force NATO members to come to the aid of the U.S., plus it would give Trump a reason to suspend elections. The smart thing to do is nothing. Let Trump twist in the wind of his own making.
