Washington shouldn’t be a get-rich scheme. Mary Peltola wants congressional term limits, stronger campaign finance laws, restrictions on members of Congress trading stocks, and tougher rules to stop politicians from using public office to enrich themselves. 🧵

Good on her, and I hope she succeeds. But the illusion will end when she walks in on her first day as a member of Congress, where she will hit an impenetrable brick wall of graft and corruption.

I’m not on favor of term limits, we want experts in how government runs. I could possibly get behind a term limit of 24 years, enough time to build some good institutional knowledge but not end up with someone who has lost their cognition. This doesnt stop stupidity(Tuberville) but thats on voters.

Yeah, like Susan Collins, 73, who promised to serve only two terms but is running for her fifth. If she lives to serve out her term, she'll be 79! Or Mitch McConnell, 84, who if he's actually not dead has served since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Her opponent, Dan Sullivan, has been in Congress for 12 years and is making himself and his buddies rich. Alaska deserves a senator working for Alaskans, not themselves or their donors. 3/3

I agree, except for term limits. Ask Michigan how term limits worked for them. If we get big money out, the people will have more say in who stays and who goes. If we didn't have Presidential term limits, I submit we wouldn't have Trump. Remember why we have them. FDR was too successful.

I highly recommend that before any American citizen votes in the 2026 midterm elections that they sign up for the free online courses at Hillsdale College and take the course titled American Citizenship and its Decline. It will change your life.

I just watched Ross Douthat’s @nytimes.com exit interview. In it he discusses religion being overtaken by nationalism on the right and the rise of DJT. Conservative Christian beliefs fostered toxic empathy which the progressive left took advantage of to foist woke insanity on us. No more of that.

Of course the left will do anything to try and stop honest patriotic information from getting to the American people. People please note that anything coming out of any PBS outlet is leftist propaganda.

I'm aware the UK probably has similar issues, but in reality, you should have had that all tied up years back, the founding fathers, bless their innocence, would not believe the dirt you have running things right now, maybe make it the last time possible

Well...all of those things are pretty much in existence...in the Constitution...except for term limits...it won't be any good, though, if the rules are allowed to be ignored.. and so far, nobody has the balls or the will to change things...especially not Democrats... Join the Democratic Socialists.

Term limits are NOT democracy and won’t fix anything. To fix our corrupt system we need regular scheduled elections and remove corporate funding from the system. Overthrow of the Alito Roberts “Citizens United” ruling is essential. Regular elections for court justices makes them accountable!

So to simplify what she is saying, we need to rein in our leaders so they can start working for the people who elected them into their positions. I totally agree with all her points.

Yep, and these issues should be some of the first tackled by the Democrats in January. I hope January doesn't turn into a subpoena-fest. We have plenty of time for that. First, we need to undo some of the damage and prevent future damage.

You’re obviously someone who doesn’t understand the arguments against. Far better to eliminate partisan gerrymandering, making districts much more open to a wider swath of the electorate. You’ll eliminate the fringe loons in the vast majority of districts and see greater turnover at elections.

I don't want term limits. I want limits on lying to constituents, corruption, & big money buying our reps. We need people who know govt. Look at Bernie? If not for him, and few others, fighting year after year for us, where would we be now? Limit actors and business people. They've been the problem.

"...stronger campaign finance laws, restrictions on members of Congress trading stocks, and tougher rules to stop politicians from using public office to enrich themselves." Do that, and term limits won't be necessary. The grifters won't stick around.

Mary #Peltola is running for the Senate from #Alaska to replace Dan Sullivan. Each state needs to be represented by ppl who care about the ppl who elect them to office. Dan Sullivan has only made himself richer. Alaska's rich history & amazing people shld be represented by someone who cares.🗳️

Term limits is a horrible idea - gives more power to lobbyists and moneyed interests, who can more easily sway a series of inexperienced lawmakers coming in and out. Judging from the experience in Michigan.

It's a good idea. Some states have a seriously dumbed-down, radicalized population who votes for these politicians because they go after the people the radicalized voters hate. These politicians are ENTRENCHED and there is no way to get them out. Term limits fix that. Especially for SCOTUS.

I’m in Alaska right now and the political ads are fierce. Her opponents have resorted to mud slinging and it’s just ugly.

She makes sense. If we’ve got to make our government unattractive to those who would seek to profit personally from what SHOULD be public service.

They'd been doing this for years and interestingly it was when these mf'ers got greedy is when EVERYONE saw them for what they were. Before some knew but because it wasn't prevalent no one flinched. Bush though opened some eyes and Trump tripped the damn sirens. Stupidity at its finest.

Here's what I want as law: No elected federal, state, or local official may accept any sort or form of enrichment from any source, other than their salary, while they are in office, and for 6 years thereafter from any source who benefited from any bill they voted on or administrated.

No pension and health care for thee But both gold plated for me. Wouldn't it be nice to write, and vote for your own benefits package ?

America has two political parties: “We’re saving democracy!” and “No, WE’RE saving democracy!” Meanwhile, democracy is sitting in the corner wondering if anyone actually asked what it wants.

Just look at all the net worths of Congressional Members. How’d they amass their great and obscene million dollar fortunes on a govt salary? You know! Every vote is for sale.

Wishing her luck. Will never understand why Alaska has been a reliable red state. "Alaska receives the most federal money per resident of any U.S. state, averaging $24,796 per person (ranking 1st nationally on a per capita basis)."

She takes only grassroots $. Consider donating $5 to turn MT blue again. Bodner (I who was a R) takes out-of-state PAC $. Alme (R), handpicked by Daines, also takes PAC $. We must elect Alani!💙

I’m not a fan on term limits, there are genuinely good representatives who should be able to continue, far better to fix partisan gerrymandering and make districts accountable to more voters in any general election. We’ll get actual democracy that way.

Stock trading while in Congress is completely insane. The fact that this is even a conversation shows the world just how damn corrupt our government has become. Motivation is everything. It’s the difference between first degree murder and manslaughter.

Ro what the hell I have been asking all around about you damn I thought you disappeared. So called to see you and you are well I hope. Blessings to you and have a blessed week. Hey hit me up every once in awhile I need your humor !!!

These ideas have been proposed countless times, but the same insurmountable problem still remains: Congress has to vote on applying those limits to themselves. That will never happen.

Idea! No office holder (at least at the Federal government level) can acquire wealth, except the pay authorized for holding that office. No investment income, no outside donations, no interest, no income from shared or owned business. Just the $$$ from the job, like most of us.

The first thing that needs to happen is to completely abolish Citizens United, which is just legalized bribery. The second thing needs to happen is to impeach every single fucking member of the Supreme Court that made it happen in the first place. Judges should not be receiving gifts from shitheads

The first two have been ruled unconstitutional so good luck with that. I like politicians who advocate for things that can actually happen and not politicians who feed people fantasies.

The GOP is responsible for corrupting the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court. It’s by far one of the ugliest chapters of the American experiment. That’s what the historians will say. That’s what we are tirelessly working to change.

This should be simple. Publicly fund all federal campaigns. Strict budget limits. Term and age limits Prohibit all financial trades. Elimination of all lobbying gifts. Elimination of all campaign contributions.

I think this is a direction worth supporting. Public office should be about serving the public, not becoming a way to build personal wealth or gain private advantages. Stronger rules and greater transparency are essential to restoring trust in government.

IDK exactly how to feel. I mean, being in politics shouldn't stop a person from making a living and supporting a family. Having the national debt trebled wasn't supposed to happen, though.

We don't need term limits, we need to end gerrymandering. Voting is our process to vote out or in new people. But when the districts are drawn to throw the election, we can't get rid of unwanted politicians. End gerrymandering, end Citizens United, and see where we go.

Unfortunately, it’s a gimmick without factual merit. Term limits eliminate institutional knowledge and don’t actually address systemic problems with corruption and may make it worse. Look states who made the mistake. Enforceable laws, finance reform, & accountability = solution not term limits.

I understand why people bang the term limits drum, but what if you elect someone who is effective, are you going to change the law then? People have votes, if someone is lining their own pockets and doing a shitty job, the PEOPLE need to VOTE THEM OUT and VOTE for SOMEONE ELSE.

Term Limits abdicate the responsibility of the voters to do their solemn task, to vet the candidates, pay attention to how they conduct themselves, and then vote accordingly to either retain or dismiss that person. Term limits won't stop fraud, waste and abuse, they'll just curtail the extent of

the opportunity one person has to take advantage. And if they're clever they could make arrangements with their replacement to continue the graft. These people are elected by US to SERVE US and the things they get away with is because WE ALLOW IT. If WE WANT IT TO STOP WE NEED TO VOTE IT OUT.

IMHO voting is all the term limit we need. I do think an age limit is needed. We have rules on the minimum age someone must be to hold certain offices, therefore, it would be proper to have maximums. 72 seems fair.
