Current Affairs published an article titled “Why We’re Banning AI”, but they buried the lede… they aren’t actually banning AI at all! They’re chill with their workers using AI. An interesting culture war artifact full of cognitive dissonance: www.currentaffairs.org/news/why-wer...

Now that AI is actually really powerful and an undeniably useful tool, but also still hated by many, you’re going to see the Overton window shifting in strange and bizarre ways… Like a publication making absolutist claims that they’re banning AI while also explaining how they aren’t banning it.

“We’re banning AI . . . This doesn't mean nobody doing work here can ever use any of the softwares that are broadly lumped together as AI.” What an incredible sentence. People are going to slowly allow themselves to use AI by telling themselves that what they’re using isn’t actually AI.

This is what Hank Green did too, a policy that he's not going to use AI for images/script but implicitly saying he's still going to use it for research. I suspect many more will use this strategy. AI haters don't seem to read past the headlines. bsky.app/profile/hars...

Hank Green announces a sensible AI policy. Basically, he will continue to use AI for research (and code?) but writing and images come from humans. The anti-AI crowd just isn't that important. Creators can be open about their LLM use. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssE1...
