i wonder what would it look like for a STG to take the idea of "online features" really really seriously

dont really think you could summon the energy of like caravan events online. so what do folk actually want? anything better than "show either my steam friends or the best players in the world"? exhaustive player stats? some gaudy gem that throbs and glisters to inform you that you are now Bronze IV?

I just want daily or weekly rankings. Something for me to hop on and have fun seeing who's got the best score this week. Maybe some kind of weekly challenge with modifiers like a certain ship / bluerev mission stuff. If you wanna go really wild, I could see an in-game arcade akin to DBFZ working.

i planned for bluerev to have a daily challenge mode on launch but fell out of love with the idea really quickly, couldn't get it away from a "running a bad build in an action roguelike" feeling

I can respect that. For me that's part of the fun. Like for example, I have quite honestly never played Buckler Dee, so it could be neat to be forced to play it and develop routes. I do not think this would feel good as a daily mode thing. A week would probably feel better, to feel less fleeing.

a friend was kinda remarking on the last thing yesterday in a similar manner. on one hand it's disappointing to think that it would probably "work" bc it feels shallow to people who have developed strong intrinsic motivation, but i think there is an underlying gap there outside of the arcade context

the ability to watch good replays doesn't create the path to perceiving improvement or understanding skill and dedication. it's very different imo to actually see players at different points in the journey struggling it out in real time. i've really loved watching waiwai streams this year bc of that

obviously that's not to say i think "rankings" are like the best choice or whatever (though i can certainly think of games that use systems like that), in fact with a scene at the barcade and someone at home to bounce off of i believe even in a solitary genre like this the social experience is best

I think the obvious answer is "Twinkle Star Sprites 99". I'm sure there's a non-insignificant market for a battle royale shmup with clear visuals, cool music, and deep mechanics.

One could also imagine a coop mode with like 10 players and enemies that get both more numerous, agressive and resistant as the player count increases, forcing them to strategize. Bonus point if player ships have different speed/shot/utility and have complementary roles.

The only thing I can think of is some sort of seasonal or weekly challenge, but that would mean constant updates or some sort of rotation of stages. Other thing is make game with stage editor and allow users to share stages, mario maker style. Both seem like immense undertaking for quite niche.

90-sec caravan game with a funny enough theme that Ludwig tries to beat NL's score the online feature that matters is "stream-friendly"

This makes me think of Dariusburst AC, with Chronicle Mode having 1000s of stage routes with interconnected cabinets making progress, event modes & certain chronicle stages having new bosses etc. Online leaderboards seemed heavily competitive for every route & ship type so seemed like a good time.

iirc there was some mix of in-arcade leaderboards and online ones (along with resulting competition & chronicle progress). Vritra Hexa does this a little with the arcade being tagged for each online score. Repping your local arcade seems like a fun way to prop up competition

Being one of the better coop shmups to begin with probably helped to draw people in. Seemed like an attempted revitalization & activity peak of modern arcade shmups that wasn't really continued upon (also clearly designed for short 1cc duration but score attack / leaderboard focus)
