I'm going to do a history exploration of shmups, like I did with fighting games a few years ago. I will play all shmups, beginning with the ones in arcades, starting from... 1962. It will allow me to see trends and some influences, and determine once and for all which is "the first shmup to do X".

Videogames is the creative field where creatives are least recognised, most of the time their names are hidden away on the finished product. This is obviously deliberate on the industry's part but the audience enables it when they fail to care about the people who make this stuff.

sorry i need to publicly be a hater for a second but what do you mean the giant 230k+ signature save mass effect petition is only about the IP and not the devs that were laid off

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Vandal Hearts is, was & shall always be the most fun SRPG ever made in my eyes. No grinding, no repeat maps, no praying for rare drops. Just a game with a start, an end, and a load of cool, unique set pieces in-between that you play through. Also some secrets Learn about or reminisce here👇

to weigh in on the arcade game discourse earnestly: i’ve been slowly getting into them more and more lately, playing both shmups and beat em ups, having a great time with both and i think they’re extremely inviting and fun and rewarding even and arguably especially at lower skill levels

The internet is wrong about arcade games pt. 8452821 Super cool flyer for World Rally, which the internet attributes to the 1993 Gaelco game of the same name, despite this being a clearly different game, with a vertical monitor which was never released, by Logitec / Logi Tec (Japan, 1983)

it cannot actually be ignored or danced around that the closure of BioWare came so soon after the Saudi and Jared Kushner acquisition of EA. they absolutely did take the studio making EA’s broadly queerest games out back and shoot it old yeller style. do not let yourself or colleagues ignore that

this is (probably) price anchoring. the reason microsoft has leaked "$1,200–$1,800" to the press now is that when they announce it at $1,199, people will go 'hmm. not as bad as I thought' instead of 'lol no'.

Why do we keep on doing this? Praising a 'small core team' for a game with 1100+ people in the credits is incredibly misleading. This PR narrative hurts, hides the massive shadow workforce of outsourced developers and testers, and sets impossible standards for actual indie teams.

GamesIndustry.biz@gibiz.bsky.social

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

"Everyone would have killed for a Neo Geo when it released but they couldn't afford it" - every videogame historian ever, forgetting that it was a literal meme for a few years & the best reviewed game was a mid Ghouls n Ghosts knock off that cost 8x what that game's year old MD port did

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Same goes for Wizardry series. Responsible for birthing or influencing half the games industry. (Missing branch - Influence over Portopia NES that leads to birth of Japanese ADV and VN genres). [CREDITS - Taigen Moon/The Cellar]

I think a lot about how the Ultima series helped to invent/popularize RPGs, first-person games, immersive sims, and MMORPGs, and yet basically has 0 modern relevancy.
