Are Copilot or Cursor good tools for someone just starting out on their coding/indie hacking journey? 👨‍💻 Or do they risk skipping essential coding foundational skills? I'm everywhere reading about how amazing these AI tools are, but I’m a bit skeptical. As someone who is still at the beginning.

I think they're great! Because making concrete things is the best way to get excited about the field, and to not lose motivation. One can also ask the AI to explain you the code as if it was a professor. It's 🚀

I’m learning to code and although Cursor has helped me build incredible things I have no idea why they worked. I’d like to be competent without needing to rely on AI. Once I am competent I’ll use AI more to assist.

Of course Carl 🙂 Because I’m still at the beginning of my journey, and every day is a new lesson. Being a software engineer isn’t about knowing everything - it’s about constantly learning, solving problems, and improving. Day by day, I’m getting better.

It depends, if you use it as a gateway to learn coding I think is great but if you just copy paste and don’t spend time to learn the fundamentals then I would say it might do more harm than good

I am also going through this period, I’d say it helps me more that I know how the AI code works. You don’t need to be an expert, just enough to understand, I am however pushing past the foundations so I don’t have to rely on AI

IMO the biggest barrier is the understanding of good programming patterns and conventions. Gen AI could easily trick you into thinking the code is good because it works ... until it stops or stops fulfilling its needs.

What you could do though is use Gen AI but make sure to double-check yourself afterwards. After you're done implementing a feature or something, copy & paste what you did into a context-isolated AI and ask for feedback and what could be improved.

That is because gen AI generally will more-or-less mimic the quality of the code that is already there. So if you start with low quality code, you will get low quality suggestions.

IF your goal is Learning to code, then turn off your AI companion and feel the pain :D IF you are just looking to ship, AI tools will do the job pretty ok/fast including infrastructure and so on We've been experimenting w those a lot lately and we are sharing the learnings over here :)
