It was only a matter of time with Opera in charge, but GameMaker is now on the AI bandwagon. Hugely disappointing development, surely opens the door for more AI features later... It certainly gives me pause for thought. www.gamedeveloper.com/production/g...

I have used GameMaker for 20+ years since I was a wee child. Been an extremely active member of the community, hosted the GMC Jam 15 times, entered it 42 times, won thrice. Hosted a GM fan site then worked at YoYo Games for 2 years. All but a small handful of my 140 games are made in it...

I get that the headline about vibe coding is getting ahead of itself - I read the Opera PR about Claude being in the CLI for a (currently) limited set of reasons... But I A) have been consistent in rejecting any AI whatsoever in my tools and B) think this is bound to open the door to more AI in GM

It’s not in the IDE or runtime itself it’s an optional extra that is your choice. Most engines have similar options. It’s a commercial reality that some customers want the option. But it’s optional… you don’t need to go near it. And the same tooling is useful even when you reject AI utter

But these days I have a policy of weaning myself off any product in my tool chain that includes or supports LLMs / generative AI. So what do I do now? First of all I certainly won't be updating to the new version of GameMaker that includes Claude. That puts a clock on my ability to publish.

godot! we're unreal devs, but i have a number of friends who have made or are making the transition between gamemaker and godot and having a great time doing it. gdscript is very python-like and i doubt you're going to see anything like default LLM integration soon.

It’s opt-in though. With the implementation of Plugins it would have happened anyway. Just ignore it. U can use Claude code or GitHub copilot with GM today anyways, it’s just one layer they removed. Ignore it, that’s it. The team did a great job the last years.

As I explained to Russell, AI is like asbestos. It's bad for society for a multitude of reasons, so leaving it up to personal choice and just not using it myself / being quiet about it isn't really an option. Fact is Opera were bragging about adding it which probably means more AI on the way for GM

I get that, but I don’t think any company will let go off AI anyways. The „market“ expects everybody to go all in on AI… and personally, working at a mid-sized software company, I do see the benefits with using AI. Does it offset the negatives? Probably not…

That's exactly what I mean by "it's like asbestos" - everyone in the market is using it because "everybody else is doing it" but like... You don't have to? It might even be commercially viable to do the exact opposite, i.e. make a big song & dance about being anti-AI & scoop up those customers

I don't care if it's opt-in. It's the fact it exists at all and is being pushed so hard that pisses me off. AI is still causing the price of hardware and electricity to skyrocket, in return for software with worse performance by people who don't fully understand what they're "making" with it.
