Intro time! I'm David. I call myself a "data generalist" because I haven't found a label that fits. I've been a software dev, data scientist, and my real passion is education so now I do Python and data training. I'm currently most interested in skills that data people *actually* need to know.

My book "The Well-Grounded Data Analyst" is out early 2025! It is a collection of real-world data analysis projects to level up your skills and you can already get it in early access. Use the code au35asb to get 35% off (on any Manning title, not just mine!) www.manning.com/books/the-we...

'data generalist' I like it! Felt very similar to you where I had a hard time summarizing me between SWE—MLE—DS—teacher Cool to see your passion in education! I've been doing this mostly on the side these days— I'd love to talk about edu approach sometime w/ you :D And exciting about your book!

BTW I love talking about educational approaches, happy to connect sometime! We also did a bunch of episodes of our podcast (called Half Stack Data Science) all about data education. Had some great guests on. Apparently you can just approach amazing people and they're just... happy to talk? Who knew?

Just added to my podcast player! I never taught data, so I have no expertise here - but the educational component of data is a fascinating space, so it'll be exciting to hear from practitioners in it.

Awesome people are just so awesome! ♥️ I'm totally going to check out that podcast! I've been doing lightweight efforts in especially reaching out to school teachers I know about data, 'AI', and CS. I know there's a csedweek.org coming up I'll have to connect w/ you sometime soon if it's all good!

Yes! Exactly this! I'd always have to append 'hi, me data scientist' with what I'm actually doing. It's just too big of an umbrella for such a diverse field & set of people 'Data Generalist' is ironically probably the most accurate & specific title for folks like yourself

How do you cover all the devops, deployment and platform skills that people need? I feel like this is a big gap for people coming to data engineering from being an analyst. They’ve never worked as a software engineer to pick up these skills, they are actually unknown unknowns.

I agree that gap exists and I consciously stayed away from it. One way was to avoid calling it "data science". The skills you mention are not traditional analyst skills, plus they warrant a book of their own. I'd read an "analyst to engineer" transition book!

I agree that these are unknown unknowns. I wrote some time ago about the DS SWE "hierarchy of needs" and the top ones are pretty far away from DevOps. DS have a lot of mileage to cover. CQ4DS focuses on these first steps.
