It is possible to build machine learning systems which punch up instead of punching down.

A lot of people say generative AI shouldn't infringe on copyright. These researchers actually tried to do it. The result: an 8 terabyte dataset of text that's openly licensed or in the public domain & 7 B parameter model that performs as well as Meta's Llama 7B www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

I've seen many blog posts and social posts by these supposed true artisans saying that they tried this method, and the output was subpar. Well, maybe it would have taken just as long if you had just written the code, but for the rest of us, we now have an option to build without you.

In dbt, it’s not possible to create models from a single generator file that generates logical models based on a list of parameters to iterate through. So, you have to make a separate file for each model you want to create, even if they’re almost the same as a bunch of other models.

I've been interacting with r/dataengineering a bit recently, and I'm impressed by the size and engagement with the community there, but... Folks on #databs / #datasky seem much less likely to just mouth off without thinking or reading! I think I much prefer what we have here on BlueSky.

Cancer incidence rises when people live longer and have access to preventive care to diagnose it in time to treat it, and effective treatment increases cancer prevalence because we count the people who are still alive – this is a good thing, and I'm so fucking tired.

Is SDF a worthy acquisition that will improve the lives of dbt's community of analytics and data engineers? Yes! SQLMesh continues to shine, offering game-changing features like Virtual Data Environments and a superior Plan/Apply workflow, making it my top choice for data transformation.

Is there anything specific you want to know about OLAP cubes, especially newer open-source systems (e.g., ClickHouse, Druid, Starrocks, Pinot, Kylin, Doris, Cube, and more)? Which one is your favorite and why?

DuckDB 1.2 brings serious performance to real-world queries! Selective joins, IN lists, Top N, partitioned parquet reads, and more get much faster! Performance is also incrementally improved ~across the board. Plus, the CSV reader improves (latin-1 for Windows folks!), SQL is friendlier, and more!
