With respect to Google, the entire reason people are flocking to old digicams over their phones is because HDR does not equal good. Not everything needs to be a mid-tone. Contrast gives an image pop. I feel like I’ve been taking crazy pills since the iPhone 7

Also FWIW I’m referring to HDR as the ability to show a lot of shadow and highlight detail - not necessarily the modern interpretation which is mostly just “brighter”.

IG blinding you is the latter, but pushing and pulling shadows and highlights from captured data was the original computational photography interpretation of the acronym, and what I am referring to here.

I think this is why Photographic Styles are so cool on iPhone. I can finally choose exactly how my photo should look. Apple's acquisition of a color grading tool makes me think we can expect similar for video soon too. Thankfully you can just turn off HDR.

My GX80 is still holding on. At least the photos it puts out have some character. If every photo looks like it’s been through a HDR pipeline then creative/skill expression dies.

That’s why the major Chinese smartphone manufacturers dominate the smartphone photography market. Even if they don’t always get it right, they focus more on a style influenced by the look of film photography and natural imagery, while Google and other Western leaders serve up visual mush.

Wild, the original looks perfectly decent. I wish the pipeline for editing photos was simpler when using a real camera. I dislike the tedious process of transferring photos off my camera, dealing with enormous raw files in whatever cursed photo editor is available and managing enormous libraries.

Pixel photos don't particularly pop either. The Oppo and Xiaomi Ultras do phone photography much better and we need Samsung and Apple to copy.

HDR is often implemented poorly. In cameras, in video games, in movies. So it's getting a bad rap. When it's done well it's transformative and impressive.

The Live Photos function on iPhone highlights this perfectly as the video clip plays for a beat when you scroll to a photo, and everyone looks fine in the video, but then it freezes on the photo frame and everyone turns into a sickly ghost.
