I finished FF9! Including the superbosses! A few achievements are still up, but I'm not sure if I will tackle them (I'm interested in trying Excalibur II, but can't be arsed to kill 10000 enemies). What do you think I should play next? Final Fantasy VII OG? Final Fantasy VIII? #finalfantasy

I'm 5 hours in and I think I'll stick with it. It's on my bucket list to finish it for more than 25 years, so why not finally get it going? :-) But the German translation is atrocious. Not necessarily the script (which has some flaws), but it's so full of bugs it's ridiculous.

I wanted to finish it before its birthday, and I didn't. But that's alright. I'm exactly where I left 24 years ago. At the beginning of Disc 4, before the final dungeon. But I took my time. 50 hours in and still so many side quests to solve. Pretty sure I'll finish it by the end of this week.

And let me say, it is a wonderful, wonderful game. I'm having a LOT of fun and there's so much to explore. I really get why this is a fan favourite. Too bad it was at the end of its console generation.

The esoteric side quests are my favourite part of FFIX. The game's battle speed is atrociously slow and almost half of the party members (Freya, Amarant, Quina) have very little to do in the story. Also not a big fan of the Trance and equipment skill systems. Great OST and graphics, though!

The battle speed is horrendous, I concur. I find myself hitting the 4x speed boost more often than I thought. I did like the equipment skill system, though, but Trance really is botched. DQ11 has a similar system, and they did it much better.

For me, it's the other way around. I had my difficulty with the series in the late 90s and early 2000s, but now that I replay all of the games (the HD and Pixel remasters, mostly), I find them all fantastic. Even the controversial ones like FF2. Maybe it's because of my 10-year gaming abstinence :D

This is also one of the songs where I think that Uematsu's Morricone influence shines brightest. You can play this to the "Ectasy of Gold" scene, and it works beat for beat. And yes, of course I tried it!
