It and the lift started as in jokes in people's communities, the idea being to confuse people outside of the communities It probably won't stick around because of that

I thought the skull was like "dying from laughter" or something

the idea behind the skull is that you've died from laughter, more or less. people sometimes just say "dead" as a sort of synonym for "lol", too. in french, their lol is mdr, "mort de rire", also basically meaning "died laughing".

I’m pretty sure 💀 originated from “I’m dead”, which in turn I think is a shortening of the idea of “I’ve died from laughing so hard”
